🔍 Did You Know? Period pain isn't something you just have to live with. Please share with all the women in your lives as it may provide an answer.
Many women are told that painful, heavy, or irregular periods are simply "normal." But what if the answer lies in something as measurable as the fat composition of your blood?
Omega-3 fatty acids — specifically EPA and DHA — are essential fats the body cannot produce on its own. They are known to support a healthy inflammatory response in the body (Harris & Von Schacky, 2004, Preventive Medicine). When omega-3 levels are low relative to omega-6, the body's ability to regulate inflammation at a cellular level may be compromised.
Research suggests that the average Western diet tends toward a high omega-6 to omega-3 ratio — often reaching 15:1 or higher — which may contribute to chronic inflammation over time (Simopoulos, 2002, Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy). Many practitioners consider a ratio below 3:1 to be a more optimal target. This imbalance is common — and most people don't even know it exists in their own body.
Worth noting: the omega-6:omega-3 ratio is an independent marker of inflammatory load. Even if your absolute omega-3 levels appear reasonable, a high ratio can still signal an imbalance that warrants attention.
The Omega-3 Index Test measures the percentage of EPA and DHA in your red blood cell membranes. An optimal omega-3 index is generally considered to be 8% or above (Harris & Von Schacky, 2004, Preventive Medicine). Most Australians fall well below this.
This isn't about guessing or taking supplements blindly. It's about understanding what's actually happening in your body — and making informed decisions based on real data.
💬 When did you last have your omega-3s tested? If the answer is "never," it might be time.
