Connection Before Redirection
Before trying to redirect your child’s behaviour, take a moment to connect first. Connection means tuning in to how your child is feeling—through eye contact, a gentle touch, a calm voice, or simply acknowledging their emotions.
Why it works:
• Helps your child feel heard and understood
• Reduces stress and resistance
• Builds trust and strengthens your relationship
• Makes redirection more effective
Tip: Try saying something like, “I see you’re upset,” or offering a reassuring hug before guiding them to the next activity. A little connection first makes redirection smoother and helps your child feel safe and supported.
