Kaleidoscope of Thought Using creativity for growth and insight. Individualised and group mindfulness art therapy sessions Over this time I have worked with children 0-12years.

I have been working with children and adolescents for over 25 years. I started out in the Early Childhood sector and am a qualified Teacher. I have dabbled in working with children with additional needs, physchology and counselling studies but found my heart and passion lies in alternate therapies with a special interest in anxiety in adolescents. I am a qualified art therapist and have been practicing now for a few years on the Sunshine Coast.

First Adult Sip & Create Mindfulness Session with a beautiful bunch of ladies. As we all navigate this busy hectic world we live in the session primarily focused on identifying our inner strengths, coping strategies and how to minimise anxiety and stress. We explored breathing techniques and used essential oils as a means to reduce stress and find grounding.
It was nice to sit back and observe what each individual was taking from the session.

Mandalas...children and adults of all ages are drawn to these for a reason. They are a symbolic representation of wholeness. And like most art therapy activities it's not about the final product it's about the journey. The nature of creating a mandala is therapeutic and representational with the colours and shapes we choose to use. Mandalas can help well-being and reduce anxiety.

What is art therapy and why is it helpful?
Art therapy uses the nonverbal language of art as a means of connecting what is inside us with outer realities and life experiences. Creating images can help us understand who we are and enhance life through self expression. Art making is one of the most ancient forms of healing so whilst art therapy is a relatively new practice the idea that art making can be a form of therapy is very old.
The process of art therapy and its potential to help people grow and heal comes from the act of making art. Helping people understand their art expressions is just part of the process as the making of art is equally important.
Art therapy is a modality with special qualities for reparation, transformation and self exploration.

A fun creative session you can do with a group of children. Using rocks/pebbles and decorating with patterns, colour and positive affirmations. This is a viral trend where they are left in the community for others to find. For this experience we took it to the classroom setting and made it available in a basket for children to access throughout the school day when required. The idea was the children could take one and use it for as long as they needed and then pop it back in the basket afterwards.

Being creative is an act we all embrace...its not always with a brush or oil crayon...its in our thoughts, our cooking, our imaginative play, our conversations, our interactions...
Being creative allows you (the simple human) to release and enter a whole new being. So stop for a minute and just be... let your creativity step up and take a hold. Take a deep breathe and just see what comes of it...it may be magical!
