What can a wearable device reveal about movement across an ordinary day?

Bhaveena Patel is a Clinical Pharmacist with extensive experience in medication management for people living with Parkinson’s. Her Conference session will focus on the Parkinson’s KinetiGraph (PKG), a wearable device that records movement patterns over time.

The information can help build a more objective picture of motor symptoms and support better-informed conversations about medication timing and symptom management alongside clinical assessment.

Session focus: PKG & Wearable Motor Monitoring

Apathy is not laziness.

It can be a genuine and deeply misunderstood non-motor feature of Parkinson’s—affecting motivation, initiation and engagement even when the person still cares about the outcome.

Dr Simone Shaw is a Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist with a focus on neurological conditions. Her Conference presentation will explore apathy, motivation and behavioural change, helping people with Parkinson’s, families and clinicians better understand what may be happening and how support can be approached more effectively.

What can our genes tell us about Parkinson’s?

Associate Professor Miguel Rentería is leading one of Australia’s most ambitious efforts to answer that question. He is Principal Investigator of the Australian Parkinson’s Genetics Study—Australia’s largest Parkinson’s genetics cohort, involving more than 21,000 participants overall, including more than 12,000 people living with Parkinson’s.

Joining us live online, Miguel will explain what genetics is teaching researchers about Parkinson’s, why large studies matter, and what the science can—and cannot yet—tell us.

Parkinson’s is never just one symptom—and no two people experience it in quite the same way.

That is why the 2026 Parkinson’s Conference is built around one central idea: Seeing the Whole Person.

On Thursday, 8 October, people living with Parkinson’s, families, carers, clinicians, researchers and community organisations will come together on the Sunshine Coast for leading research, practical strategies and honest conversations about the many ways Parkinson’s affects daily life.

Over the coming weeks, we will introduce the people and topics shaping this year’s program.

Well done to everyone who made it through assessment week. We run assessments every quarter at The Park. They are an important part of our Parkinson's protocol for healthy living and they give us a benchmark for where each one of you are, compared to where you were and compared to healthy age matched norms. Data is key to your performance. Data keeps you motivated and present. It helps us redirect therapy goals. It keeps us all on track and moving in the right direction. If you missed assessment week, please speak to your therapist about catching it up asap.

This clip recorded at the World Parkinson's Congress is Mr Jimmy Choi talking about metrics and how important the data was for him to manage his training regime. He has had Parkinson's for 23 years and he is the most incredible athlete. It's not everyones goal to be an amazing athlete BUT it most likely is everyones goal to maintain their independence. You know what ? they go hand in hand for someone living with Parkinson's.
You don't have to be another Jimmy Choi, but consider what type of training you need, at your stage in life, and in your journey with Parkinson's and we will help you work through that. We have the data, we have the research, we have the expertise and most of all, we have your back.
