Why do some people find self-care so difficult, even when they know it's important?

Many health and mental health professionals have worked with clients who understand what they "should" do.

They know they need more rest.
They know they should eat regular meals.
They know they need better boundaries.
They know they need time to recover.
Yet they struggle to act on that knowledge.

As WHO Self-Care Month begins, it's worth asking a question that often receives surprisingly little attention: Why do some people find self-care so difficult, even when they know it's important? Many health and mental health professionals have worked with clients who understand what they "should" do

Do you work with clients who care for everyone except themselves?
Some clients don't struggle because they lack motivation. They struggle because caring for others has become more important than caring for themselves.

They skip meals, overcommit, avoid disappointing people, and feel guilty whenever they try to prioritise their own wellbeing. They often present with burnout, compassion fatigue, stress-related health concerns, emotional exhaustion, or repeated difficulty maintaining behaviour change.

Yet the more we encourage them to "put themselves first", the more guilt, resistance, and self-criticism can emerge.

Our new CPD workshop, Unmitigated Communion – Managing Over-Care and Self-Neglect, explores how excessive caregiving can become a coping pattern that ultimately undermines both wellbeing and effectiveness.
In this practical 3-hour training, you'll learn how to:

✅ Recognise the signs of over-care, people-pleasing, and self-neglect
✅ Understand the role of guilt, approval-seeking, and fear of rejection
✅ Reframe self-care as an act of sustainable caregiving rather than selfishness
✅ Use values-aligned communication that reduces resistance to change
✅ Support healthy boundaries without triggering shame or defensiveness
✅ Help clients include themselves in the care they so readily offer others

This workshop is particularly relevant for practitioners working with:

• Caregivers and carers
• Health and aged-care professionals
• Parents and family caregivers
• Burnout and compassion fatigue
• Chronic illness and health behaviour change
• Clients who struggle with boundaries, guilt, and self-worth

Rather than asking clients to care less about others, we'll explore how to help them care for themselves enough to continue caring sustainably.

Because self-care isn't the opposite of caring for others. Sometimes it's what makes caring possible.

Have you ever left a session thinking:

"Why did that feel like a debate?"

Some clients trigger an urge to explain more, justify your reasoning, or prove your expertise.

Often, that's the beginning of a power dynamic.

In our Unmitigated Agency workshop, we'll explore how clinicians unintentionally become pulled into competitive relational patterns—and how to respond differently.

Because when control feels threatened, dominance increases.

And when autonomy feels respected, flexibility emerges.

Magnificent Minds of Hypnotism:
Milton Erickson - The Art of Indirect Influence

By the mid-20th century, hypnosis had been measured, debated, and defined.

Milton Erickson approached it differently.

A psychiatrist and medical doctor, Erickson was known for his highly individualised clinical style. Rather than using rigid scripts or standard inductions, he adapted his language to each person in front of him.

He listened carefully.

He observed.

He used the client’s own words, metaphors, interests, and experiences as the material for change.

Instead of confronting resistance directly, Erickson often worked indirectly — telling stories, offering suggestions woven into conversation, allowing insight to emerge naturally.

To some, it looked unconventional. To others, it looked intuitive.

What made Erickson distinctive was not spectacle, but flexibility.

Hypnosis, in his hands, became less about imposing a method and more about meeting the person where they were.

Modern hypnotherapy continues to reflect this principle: effective work is not formulaic.

It is responsive.

When Strong, Driven Clients Leave You Feeling Stuck

Many practitioners have worked with clients who seem highly capable, articulate and motivated, yet something in the therapeutic process feels unusually difficult.

They may:
• Take control of sessions
• Challenge or correct the practitioner
• Dismiss emotional exploration
• Focus relentlessly on solutions and productivity
• Trigger subtle power struggles or feelings of being "managed"

These clients are often described as controlling, resistant, arrogant, perfectionistic, or even narcissistic.

But what if something else is happening?

In this live 3-hour CPD workshop, we'll explore Unmitigated Agency – a control-based coping pattern where competence, dominance, and over-functioning serve as protection against vulnerability, shame, and perceived weakness.

Rather than viewing these clients through a pathology lens, we'll examine how autonomy threat, status threat, and relational dynamics shape engagement, defensiveness, and emotional accessibility.

What will you learn?

How to recognise unmitigated agency in clinical practice
Why over-control and dominance often emerge under threat
How to prevent subtle power struggles and relational ruptures
Strategies for validating competence without reinforcing over-functioning
Practical de-escalation and micro-repair skills
Ways to expand emotional tolerance without undermining autonomy

This highly interactive workshop includes clinical examples, role-plays, discussion, and practical tools that can be applied immediately in practice.
