Keeping mums and babies together when they need it most. 💙

A new $27 million, eight-bed Mother and Baby Unit has been announced for Nambour General Hospital, providing specialist mental health care for local mothers experiencing serious mental health challenges after childbirth.

The purpose-built unit will allow mums to receive care while staying with their babies in a safe and therapeutic environment, helping families stay together during what can be one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

The unit is part of a more than $160 million Queensland Government investment in perinatal mental health services, delivering 30 additional public Mother and Baby Unit beds across the state.

13 new Enrolled Nurses recently completed their first week with us at Sunshine Coast Health!

What’s an Enrolled Nurse?

Enrolled Nurses help care for patients, monitor their health, support treatments and medications, and provide education and reassurance to patients and their families. They work alongside a broader clinical team of Registered Nurses and other health professionals.

They complete a Diploma of Nursing, which includes hundreds of hours of practical clinical experience before becoming registered to practise.

Welcome to Sunshine Coast Health, we’re so glad you’re here. 🫶

This stroke week, one of our stroke patients acknowledges the incredible care provided to them by the passionate team at Sunshine Coast Health. 💛

This year, we honour the family members, friends, bystanders and clinicians who support people who have experienced, or will experience, a stroke, while raising awareness of the importance of recognising the early signs.

How do we notice the signs?

FAST

Yes obviously, but how?

F.A.S.T

🙂 Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
💪 Arms: Can they lift both arms?
🗣️ Speech: Is their speech slurred or confused?
⏱️ Time: Time is critical. Call 000 immediately if you see any of these signs.

Thank you for acting FAST. 🫶

Meet one of Sunshine Coast Health’s youngest nurses, Matisse!

At just 15 years old, Matisse began studying to become a nurse. She qualified as an Enrolled Nurse at 18 years old when she started her career at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. 🩺

“I’ve always wanted a career where I could genuinely help people while also having the opportunity to continue learning and growing professionally. Healthcare offers so many different career pathways, and I love that every day is different!”

Inspired by the experienced senior nurses on her ward who support and encourage her growth, Matisse’s goal is to qualify as a registered nurse and progress into a Team Leader.

In the hospital, you’ll find her on the Gynaecology and Urology ward, where she’s really excited to continue developing her skills and knowledge.

Outside of the hospital, you probably won’t find her. Because she LOVES to travel. She’s already seen 16 countries and wants to see a whole lot more. 🌏

As someone who was born and raised on the Coast, Matisse feels privileged to “provide the highest standard of care possible" to our community.

"We're actually the second site in Australia to do this. We’re sort of groundbreaking in Queensland!"

Clinical Haematology Nurses Kylie and Alex were thrilled to perform our first red blood cell depletion procedure by apheresis on Ron here, who has Polycythemia Rubra Vera (PRV).

PRV is a type of blood cancer where the bone marrow produces too many red blood cells. Excess red cells thicken the blood, increasing clot risk, which is the main complication of this disease.

Professor Craig Wallington-Gates, our Director of Haematology, explains that this procedure “removes the excess red blood cells in a very efficient, directed manner, bringing down the red blood cell count very quickly, resulting in greater blood fluidity that doesn’t clot so easily.”

Compared to previous methods, such as venesection, in which whole blood is removed, patients will experience less dizziness, lightheadedness and low blood pressure through this procedure. And over time, patients may need fewer visits to the hospital as the treatment rapidly lowers and stabilises their red blood cell count, thereby resulting in fewer clotting complications. ❤️

Sunshine Coast Health is now a recognised Hidden Disabilities Sunflower organisation!

But what does this all MEAN?!

We’re here to help. 🌻

T️he sunflower symbol is representative of hidden disabilities.

Hidden disabilities?

Some disabilities, health conditions and chronic illnesses are not immediately apparent to others. This can sometimes make it difficult for people with non-visible conditions to have their support needs recognised and understood. These conditions can affect how a person communicates, processes information, navigates their environment, or manages everyday activities.

This may include, but is certainly not limited to, conditions like autism, chronic pain, hearing loss, anxiety and dementia.

If someone is wearing the sunflower symbol, it discreetly indicates that they may need a little more support and understanding. 💚

If someone is wearing a white lanyard or badge with the sunflower symbol, it intends to signal that the wearer understands the initiative and can help! 🤍

This is part of how we aim to consistently be a more inclusive and supportive healthcare environment for patients, visitors and staff. 🌻
