Gradual weight bearing is a key part of wrist rehabilitation after a wrist fracture. It's important to avoid starting this too early, and critical to implement for regaining bone mineral density that is lost after immobilisation casting/splinting.

This is one of many ways we gradually introduce weight bearing.

One of our junior therapists, Brooke, had the pleasure of participating in Healthia's Early career therapist professional development in Brisbane over the weekend where she collaborated with fellow hand therapists from all over Australia!

Sharpening practical skills, building our knowledge base and collaborating with other therapists are the foundations of becoming a great hand therapist. A big thank you to the presenters from Extend Rehab for providing their spare time for mentorship to this cohort.

May the learning continue!

A very big CONGRATULATIONS to Katie on her retirement this week.

Katie has run her own hand therapy practice since 1994 after working in hand therapy units in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and the UK and qualifying as an Occupational Therapist at UQ in 1987. She moved to the coast in 2001 and founded Sunshine Coast Hand Therapy.

We are sad to see you go but excited for your next chapter!

On behalf of everyone, patient or colleague, we thank you for your years of expertise, commitment to the profession, and laughter.

Another low profile radial nerve palsy splint in the books!
Our lovely therapist Brooke, fabricated this splint with one of our senior therapists' Emma for a patient with radial nerve palsy from a humeral greater tuberosity fracture.
This functional splint, placed his wrist in a more functional position to allow for a controlled grasp and release.

Big or small we'll treat them all no matter the age or the stage!

Joe had the pleasure of making a mini cap splint for a 3 year old client today who came in after getting her finger caught in a door. With a little bit of protection and some TLC, she'll be back to playing in no time.

Whilst Joe's hands may be big and meaty, they certainly are dextrous.

If you have any small children with hand or finger injuries, come see us in clinic and we'll get you sorted.

Happy Friday!

Issues with your grasp? Check this out!

This patient presented in clinic with wrist drop and an inability to extend and open his hand following a fall onto his forearm which caused a peripheral interossei nerve entrapment, a similar presentation to a radial nerve palsy.

Our lovely therapist Joe with help of our principal therapist Katie fabricated a functional brace to allow extension of his fingers to allow for a functional grasp. Take a look at the difference!

If you're having issues with your grasp, reach out to our friendly team ☺️
