The cost of therapy can be a significant factor in people’s decision making in regards to where to seek help. Understandably so, the cost of living is high in comparison to what the average person is earning. However, therapy can change lives and it can be a very worthwhile investment.
Sometimes people contact hypnotherapy clinics asking if we offer Medicare rebates to reduce the cost clients have to pay for therapy.
Hypnotherapy is not covered by Medicare.
However, the cost of hypnotherapy – without any medicare rebate, is, on average, similar to the cost of psychology with a medicare rebate.
How is this?
Currently in Australia, in 2026, Medicare rebates cover a maximum of 10 sessions of one to one psychology appointments over a 12 month period. The average cost of a general psychology appointment is between $180 -$280 per session, with the cost coming down to $80 - $185 when a medicare rebate in 2026 of $141.85 for general psychology is applied.
This means that the average amount people are paying out of pocket and with a medicare rebate per session for general psychology is $132.50.
Over 10 sessions this is $1,325.00 (rounded down to $1200 for cost equivalence with hypnotherapy)
In comparison, the average number of sessions required for hypnotherapy is between 3-8, with 6 being a standard maximum required. By working directly with the subconscious, and therefore directly accessing underlying patterns of thought or behaviour that a client wants to address, the duration of therapy can be much shorter. If we take 6 hypnotherapy sessions as the average, (and many issues will be able to be resolved with hypnotherapy sooner than 6 sessions) lets look at the average cost of hypnotherapy in Australia in 2026.
The average cost of hypnotherapy standard sessions range from $100-$300 per session.
If we average this amount at $200 per hypnotherapy session
And a client requires 6 sessions to resolve their issue,
This means that hypnotherapy will cost on average a total of $1200
As you can see the overall cost is very similar between general psychology and hypnotherapy. Therefore, when you are considering the cost of therapy for yourself or a member of your family, remember that even though you will not get a medicare rebate to access hypnotherapy for yourself, the cost that you will pay will not be very different to accessing general psychology with a medicare rebate.
This post is simply about making decisions for therapy based on cost.
After that it is entirely up to you to choose which therapy approach most appeals to you at the time you wish to seek therapy. Either way, if you can, take your time choosing so that you find the therapist who is right for you.
NB. the average total figure given for hypnotherapy ($1200) is high - very few hypnotherapists charge the highest rate of $300 per session so the true average here is significantly lower for most hypnotherapists across Australia.
Hypnotherapists, including at Source Hypnosis, also regularly offer packages to deal with specific issues such as
Weight Loss
Or
Stop Smoking
Many issues can be resolved at Source Hypnosis a cost of much lower than the approximate Australian national average as listed in this post
