Alex is deafblind.

As a teenager, he lost his sight and now lives with significant hearing loss. Everyday moments like ordering a coffee or joining a conversation became overwhelming, and isolation took over.

With support from Able Australia’s Communication Guides, Alex began reconnecting with his community. He now attends our recreation group regularly and this year reached a huge milestone. Alex is the first Deafblind Camp Coordinator who is deafblind, leading a committee of four deafblind people.

In the video you’ll see Alex proudly welcoming everyone to camp, with cheers and thumping tables from campers and support from interpreters. It is a moment that shows exactly what connection can look like when the right support is in place.

“I’ve been part of these camps for so long,” Alex says. “Being able to shape them now means a lot. We know what really works for deafblind people.”

But many deafblind Australians are still missing out on connection.

Your donation today helps fund Communication Guides, accessible programs and vital support so people like Alex don’t face deafblindness alone.

Alison’s laughter fills the room as she stomps little spaceships drifting across the floor. Callum is completely absorbed in a calm water scene, watching the ripples move while he searches for animals with support from his team. George is focused while playing a game of foosball with his support worker.

These moments show how much joy and connection the new Omi Budii interactive projector is bringing to the people Able Australia supports in Hobart. It is opening up new ways to play, explore and engage for people with complex disabilities.

Thank you to all of our supporters who help make this possible.
A special thank you to the Des Cooper Foundation for supporting this project and helping us provide life‑changing assistive technology.

Support can change everything for a family caring for a child with complex needs.

Cody is 14 and lives with Angelman syndrome, autism, ADHD and epilepsy. He’s non‑verbal and his care needs are constant. At Able Australia’s Children’s Respite, Cody gets to try new activities, build skills and simply enjoy being a kid.

Cody has been coming to Children's Respite for almost ten years. For him and his mum, Mel, respite is life‑changing.

“Children’s Respite has honestly been a lifesaver for me,” Mel says. “Cody started going when he was just five. His sleep is very poor and Respite gives me a chance to rest and recover, so I can be the best mum I can be.”

Your donation helps make this possible.
It provides personalised programs where children like Cody can connect, feel understood and grow, while giving families the vital break they desperately need.

❤️ Please donate today to help make connection and support possible for children like Cody.

Our powerful series of DB‑SAFE (Deafblind - Safer Access for Everyone) workshops were created to improve road safety for the deafblind community.

After participants shared their real‑world safety needs earlier in the program, we brought those insights into the workshop design.

Led by Dr Meredith Prain from Able Australia and facilitated by Clare O’Sullivan, Orientation and Mobility Specialist, the sessions explored:
- Using all the senses to stay safe
- Professionals who can assist
- Maintaining good, confident mobility
- How to report hazards and obstacles in the community.

These workshops are part of our ongoing commitment to making public spaces safer and more accessible for everyone. Thanks to all who participated!

The DB‑SAFE project is proudly supported by a Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Road Safety Grant and a Department of Transport and Planning Community Road Safety Grant.

What a fantastic day in the kitchen! Debbie, Aaron, Belinda, Kelly and George rolled up their sleeves and cooked delicious "Marry Me Chicken" with fluffy rice.

They all got stuck into the chopping, stirring and tasting, with Kelly declaring it one of the tastiest dishes she’s ever made!

With guidance from our wonderful cooking instructor, Prakash, the group learned new skills, tried new flavours and shared plenty of laughs along the way.

A heartfelt thank‑you to City of Hobart for helping fund this confidence‑building program for the people Able Australia supports.

👏 We’re proud of our CEO Lynette McKeown for taking part in an important discussion about the future of disability services.

Lynette recently joined other disability sector leaders on a panel at the NDS Conference on Staying Strong: Innovation, Sustainability & Strategic Leadership in Disability Services.

The panel looked at how organisations can continue to provide high-quality support while responding to changes in the NDIS and the disability sector.

Lynette spoke about our growth journey and how becoming a larger organisation helps us stay strong for the future. It also gives the people we support more choice, flexibility and access to a wider range of services, especially at a time when many participants are experiencing changes to their NDIS plans.
