Last Friday, during HIV Testing Week, we officially launched the new HIV self-test vending machine at St George Hospital.

The machine is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making it easier to access free, private and confidential HIV self-testing when it suits you.

To get a kit, all you need is a phone number or email address. You can do the test yourself and get a result in about 15 minutes.

This National Reconciliation Week, we reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and the role each of us can play in building a respectful and connected future.

The 2026 theme, All In, calls on all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation.

All in, in action: our Aboriginal programs are co-designed with community to increase awareness, promote prevention and testing, and improve access to care for sexually transmitted infections and blood-borne viruses. Through this work, we aim to ensure education, support and resources are culturally safe and responsive to local needs.

Sometimes, the greatest support begins with simply being there. This National Volunteer Week, we’re recognising the compassion and commitment of Ankali volunteers.

Since 1985, Ankali volunteers have provided emotional and social support to people living with HIV who may be socially isolated. The word “Ankali” is believed to come from an Aboriginal language in South Australia meaning “friend” — a name that reflects the heart of the project.

40 years on, Ankali has delivered 117 volunteer training sessions and trained more than 2,500 volunteers, who have supported more than 2,500 clients living with HIV/AIDS.

Thank you to all Ankali volunteers, past and present, for the friendship, care and connection you bring to our communities.

The theme for National Volunteer Week is Your Year To Volunteer. If you are looking for a meaningful and well supported volunteer experience, please review our website for upcoming training dates and contact information: http://thealbioncentre.org.au/ankali-project/

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is held on the third Sunday of May each year.

It is a time to remember the many lives lost to AIDS, honour those who dedicated their lives to supporting people living with and affected by HIV, and stand together in solidarity with our communities.

With advances in treatment, people living with HIV can live long and healthy lives.

Today, we remember the past, honour the progress made, and continue working towards a future free from HIV stigma.
