The nail scissors. The hand mirror. The bathroom floor at 9pm.
We know. Almost everyone tries to fix an ingrown toenail themselves first — and we'd never tell you off for it. But it's also one of the most common reasons people end up in our chair a week later with a toe that's now genuinely unhappy.
So here's the honest version.
• ✅ Generally safe: warm salt water soaks, swapping to roomier shoes, keeping the toe clean and dry, cutting straight across where you can see clearly.
• ⚠️ Usually makes it worse: digging out the corner, cutting a "V" into the nail (it's a myth — nails grow from the base, not the tip), packing cotton wool under the edge yourself, and chemical nail kits on already-irritated skin.
• 🛑 Time to stop and book: pain lasting more than a week, spreading redness, discharge, a toe that feels hot, or a nail that keeps coming back on the same toe.
And if you're managing diabetes, circulation issues or reduced feeling in your feet — please skip the home remedies entirely and have it assessed early.

Signs of infection you shouldn't ignore
Most sore toenails are a nuisance rather than an emergency. But a few signs are worth acting on promptly rather than waiting to see how things go.
Keep an eye out for:
• 🔴 Redness spreading beyond the nail edge
• 🌡️ A toe that feels hot to touch
• 💧 Any discharge, weeping or unusual smell
• 📈 Pain that's getting worse rather than better
• 🩹 Extra tissue growing over the nail edge
• 😟 Feeling generally unwell or feverish
And if you're managing diabetes, circulation problems, or reduced feeling in your feet, please have any sore toe assessed early. Reduced sensation means the toe may be more irritated than it feels — and early care is always the easier path.
We'd much rather see you for something minor than something that's had six weeks to settle in.

Today is International Left Handers Day — and we'd like to acknowledge our very own resident left-hander. 👈😄
(You'd never know, except that every pen in the practice mysteriously ends up on the wrong side of the desk.)
Here's a bit of foot trivia for the occasion: just as you have a dominant hand, most people have a dominant foot too. It's the one you'd naturally kick a ball with, or the one that steps off the kerb first without you thinking about it.
Interestingly, it doesn't always match your hand. Plenty of left-handers are right-footed, and vice versa.
It's one of the reasons we look at both feet, always — even when only one is sore. Your two feet are rarely identical twins. One is often very slightly longer, they can wear shoes down differently, and they don't always take the same load when you walk. That asymmetry is completely normal, and it's often a useful clue about what's going on.
So — quick poll for the comments. Are you a lefty? And do you know which foot you'd kick with? 👇
We're genuinely curious how many of you are crossed over.

Happy International Youth Day. 🌏
We'll be honest — most of the feet we look after have done a good few decades of walking. But there's something worth saying today.
A lot of what we see in feet at 60 and 70 started much earlier. Shoes that were too small during a growth spurt. A footy injury nobody ever got looked at. Years of work boots that never quite fit. Feet remember.
So if there's a young person in your life who's complaining about sore feet, limping a bit after sport, or wearing shoes a size too small because they like them — it's worth listening. Small things sorted out early tend to stay small.
And the other side of it: the best thing many of us can pass on isn't advice at all. It's the walk to the shops together. The trip down to the beach. The habit of moving, kept up because someone showed us how.
Look after your feet, and they'll keep you in the places you want to be — with the people you want to be there with. 💚

Are your shoes the real problem?
Here's something we see all the time: a sore toenail that's not really about the nail at all.
Feet change shape as we get older. Arches can flatten, big toe joints can stiffen or drift inward, and a shoe that fit beautifully for years can start pressing in exactly the wrong place. Add a toe box that's a little narrow, and every step drives pressure into the edge of the nail.
Worth checking:
• 👟 Can you wiggle your toes freely?
• 👟 Is there roughly a thumb's width beyond your longest toe?
• 👟 Do your toes slide forward when you walk downhill?
• 👟 Does the pain settle when you're barefoot at home?
If that last one's a yes, your shoes may be a bigger part of the story than you'd think.
We're happy to have a look at your footwear as part of an assessment.

The 9pm bathroom floor with a hand mirror. We know 🙈 No judgement- almost everyone tries it. But digging for the corner usually leaves a fragment behind AND breaks the skin on the way in. The combination is exactly what leads to infection. Safe at home ✅warm salt soak, dry properly, roomier shoes for the week. Not settling after a week? Time to book. ❤️ save this, link in bio.

How to trim your toenails properly
It sounds almost too simple to matter — but how you cut your toenails is one of the biggest factors in whether you'll ever get an ingrown one.
Three things worth knowing:
1. Cut straight across, following the natural shape of the nail. You don't need to round the corners.
2. Leave the corners where you can see them. Digging down the side to "get the corner out" is what creates the sharp spike that grows back into the skin.
3. Don't cut too short. Leave a small white edge — the nail is there to protect the toe.
And if you can't comfortably see or reach your feet, that's not a failing. It's one of the most common reasons people book with us, and there's no reason to struggle through it with a hand mirror.

Has putting your shoe on become the worst part of your morning?
Ingrown toenails turn up far more often after 50 than most people expect — and there are real reasons for that. Toenails naturally become thicker and more curved over the years. The skin around them gets a little drier. And let's be honest: reaching down to trim them comfortably becomes a genuine challenge when your knees, hips or hands aren't as cooperative as they once were.
Add a shoe that presses in the wrong spot, and a small nail edge can cause a surprising amount of pain.
The good news is that ingrown toenails are usually very manageable. In many cases the problem edge can be carefully cleared at a single appointment, and plenty of our patients simply come in regularly for nail care so it never develops at all.
Our new blog explains why they become more common with age, what genuinely helps at home, and the signs that mean it's time to get your toe looked at.
