Yesterday morning was another cracker of a day at the Junior Farmers program. Everyone took turns in practicing their cutting skills to prepare a salad for the rabbits and chickens, we practiced staying calm around the bunnies so they felt calm too and finished the morning with some sensory play & craft.

So glad to be back to our usual clients this week after schools back. Goat shenanigans with Peppy giving free goat back massages and sleepy bunny cuddles for one of our bunny whisperer clients.
I will never get tired of seeing the fun had at the farm.

Q: What is Caregiver Burnout?

A. Caregiver burnout is a state of profound mental and physical exhaustion, especially common in parents of autistic children. It arises when the constant demands of caregiving—managing meltdowns, sensory overloads, and advocating for support—drain their energy. Over time, neglecting their own needs leaves caregivers emotionally overwhelmed and trapped in guilt and frustration, which diminishes their ability to provide care and affects their mental health, relationships, and overall quality of life.— (Clinical Psychologist)

While caregiver burnout is not unique to families of autistic children, research shows that these parents face significantly higher levels of burnout compared to parents of neurotypical children. This disparity stems from the heightened and sustained intensity of care required—such as addressing unique sensory, behavioural, and communication needs, along with navigating healthcare systems and securing educational accommodations. These chronic stressors contribute to higher emotional, mental, and physical strain, often leaving parents with fewer opportunities for self-care or respite.

Next Steps to Understanding Autism in the Family

Friday 15th November 2024 - 9:30am - 4:00pm Brisbane Time - Check for Daylight saving!

This course aims to help participants understand how autism may impact family dynamics and develop strategies for addressing these. The goal is to ultimately create a neurodiversity-affirming family environment within which all members can thrive. It is a full-day event, fully recorded, and available for 60 days.
