Interested in learning more about GLP-1 medications?
I’m doing a weekend long Symposium on supporting patients considering starting, already taking or ceasing GLP-1 medication for weight loss.
I plan to share take important home messages over the weekend that aims to educate as well as reinforce my knowledge. Feel free to share with anyone you think would benefit and comment if you have questions as I can ask the brains trust at the conference if there are any tricky Qs.
Take home messages from the first talk today by Dr Jacqueline Jacques from USA for people already using GLP-1 medications:
1. Ensure what you are eating is nutritionally adequate, including adequate lean protein (at least 1.2g per kg body weight), polyphenol rich foods (i.e. colourful veg & fruit), fibre and good fats. A Mediterranean style with 40% plant rich food is helpful.
2. Daily movement, ideally with resistance exercise to reduce loss of lean muscle and protect bone loss
3. Adequate hydration (2-3l daily)
4. Test for and monitor micronutrients (blood tests) and consider a quality multivitamin to reduce risk of deficiencies, as there is a risk of undernourishment when you eat less.
5. Consider emotional and behavioural support with structured follow ups to monitor progress, support healthy lifestyle improvements, set expectations, and prepare for future cessation of the medications if desired.
6. Consider support with a professional to discuss:
- supportive nutrients like creatine, HMB, branch chain amino acids, leucine, collagen, & hormonal support
-addressing side effects like nausea, constipation, digestive discomfort from the medication and hair/skin issues resulting from weight loss.
