Congratulations to Dr Brian Wu, who has been awarded The Lived Experience Australia Award for Best Practice in Consumer and Carer Inclusion by the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
Dr Wu has been at Ramsay Clinic New Farm since 2025, and was recognised by the panel for his willingness to view a patient's whole journey with empathy.
"What I enjoy most is seeing patients make meaningful changes in their lives," said Dr Wu, "often after long periods of distress, relapse, or feeling misunderstood. In addiction psychiatry, recovery is rarely linear, and I find it deeply rewarding to walk alongside people as they regain hope, reconnect with their values, and rebuild relationships with those who matter to them.
"Empathy matters because it allows us to move beyond asking, 'What is wrong with this person?' and instead ask, 'What has happened to this person, and what do they need in order to heal?' When patients and families feel genuinely heard and understood, it can change the entire therapeutic relationship. It creates trust, reduces defensiveness, and opens the door to collaboration."
