Childhood Immunisations
Routine childhood vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to protect kids β€” and the wider community β€” from serious infectious diseases.

🧸 Free under the National Immunisation Program for all eligible Australian children
🧸 Key catch-up points: 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 4 years
🧸 School-age boosters happen later (around 12–13 years)

If you're unsure whether your child is up to date, the immunisation history is available through Medicare online or the Express Plus Medicare app. Keeping the record current also helps with childcare and school enrolments.

Cold, Flu or COVID?
This time of year, runny noses and sore throats are everywhere. Here's a quick guide to telling them apart:

🀧 Cold β€” usually starts gradually. Mild symptoms: runny or blocked nose, sore throat, mild cough. Fever is uncommon in adults.
🌑️ Flu β€” often comes on suddenly. High fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, cough. People often describe feeling "knocked flat."
🦠 COVID-19 β€” symptoms vary widely and can overlap with flu. A rapid antigen (RAT) test can help confirm.

Most viral illnesses settle with rest, fluids, and time. See your GP if symptoms are severe, getting worse rather than better, or if you're in a higher-risk group (older adults, pregnant, immunocompromised, or with chronic conditions).

Build a Healthy Plate
A simple way to plan a balanced meal β€” without counting calories or weighing food β€” is to think of your plate in three parts.

πŸ₯— Half the plate: vegetables and fruit (the more colour, the better)
🐟 A quarter: lean protein β€” fish, chicken, eggs, tofu, legumes
🌾 A quarter: wholegrains β€” brown rice, quinoa, wholemeal pasta, oats

Add a small serve of dairy or alternative, drink water with the meal, and use healthy fats like olive oil or avocado in moderation. This is the principle behind the Australian Dietary Guidelines β€” designed for everyday eating, not perfection.

Know Your Diabetes Risk
Type 2 diabetes is common β€” but it's also one of the most preventable chronic conditions we see in general practice.

🟒 The AUSDRISK tool is a free 5-minute online questionnaire developed by the Australian Government
🟒 It estimates your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next 5 years
🟒 Risk factors include age, family history, waist circumference, blood pressure, physical activity, and diet

The good news: even small, sustainable changes β€” moving more, eating well, and maintaining a healthy weight β€” can meaningfully lower your risk. If your AUSDRISK score is higher than expected, your GP can help you with the next steps, including a blood test if appropriate.

Nasal Spray Flu Vaccination
πŸ’‰ No needle? No problem. πŸ‘ƒ

The nasal spray flu vaccination is now available at My Family Doctors β€” a needle-free alternative to the traditional flu shot for children and teenagers aged 2 to 17 years.

Just two small sprays (one in each nostril) and they're protected for the season.

Great news for NSW families β€” the nasal spray flu vaccination is now FREE for all children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years, following the recent expansion of the NSW Government-funded program.

Not suitable for children under 2 years. Speak with your GP to see if it's right for your child.

Cervical Screening Every 5 Years
Cervical screening has changed in Australia β€” and many people aren't aware.

🌸 Recommended every 5 years (not every 2)
🌸 For women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74
🌸 The test now looks for HPV β€” the virus that causes nearly all cervical cancers
🌸 Self-collection is available for many people, which can make the test feel more comfortable and accessible

It's a quick test that has been shown to significantly reduce cervical cancer rates. If you're due (or unsure when you're due), your GP can check the National Cancer Screening Register for you.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia β€” and one of the most treatable when found early.

πŸ“¬ If you're aged 50 to 74, the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program posts a free home test kit to you every 2 years
πŸ“¬ You complete it at home in private and post it back in the reply-paid envelope
πŸ“¬ If you've turned 45 to 49, you can also request a free kit

The test looks for tiny amounts of blood in the stool that can't be seen with the eye β€” an early warning sign worth checking up on. If you've misplaced your kit, you can request a replacement online.

Iron Deficiency

Feeling unusually tired, breathless walking up stairs, or noticing pale skin? Iron deficiency is one of the more common reasons β€” and it’s often missed.
Who is more at risk?
πŸƒ Women with heavy periods
πŸƒ Pregnant women
πŸƒ Teenagers during growth spurts
πŸƒ Endurance athletes
πŸƒ People on plant-based diets
Iron-rich foods include lean red meat, leafy greens, lentils, chickpeas, eggs, and dried apricots. A simple blood test can check your iron stores, and your GP can help work out the cause and the right next steps.

Vitamin D & Winter Sunshine

As the days get shorter, our vitamin D levels can quietly dip. Vitamin D plays an important role in supporting strong bones, healthy muscles, and a well-functioning immune system.
You can support your levels through:
🌞 Short bursts of safe sun exposure (a brisk walk on the way to work or at lunchtime)
πŸ₯š Foods like oily fish, eggs, and fortified milk
🩺 A blood test if you’re concerned β€” your GP can help interpret the result
People at higher risk of low vitamin D include those who spend most of their time indoors, people who cover their skin for cultural or medical reasons, and older adults.
