I wish someone had told me about complicated grief when my capacity for life shrunk so much I had to take a year off work. At the time, I thought something was wrong with me. It went way beyond depression.
What I didn’t understand was that grief isn’t always just about one loss.
Sometimes it’s cumulative, with shock after shock. It was quitting the ‘dream job’, being bullied by a manager for 2 years, betrayal trauma by my best friends, breaking up with the ‘love of my life’, going no contact with my family for the first time, leaving my adult life in the UK to move countries on my own. This all happened within a year. Yes, it was my Saturn Returns.
Unlike typical grief, complicated grief can feel like your system never fully comes out of survival mode.
A lot of people silently carry this while thinking they’re lazy, dramatic, broken, weak, or failing at life.
But sometimes your nervous system is overwhelmed, grieving, and trying to protect you all at once.
This is also why approaches like EMDR and trauma-informed therapy can be so powerful - because grief doesn’t just live in thoughts.
It can live in the body, emotions, memories, and nervous system too.
If this resonates, please know you’re not alone, and you don’t have to force yourself through it or think you’re doing grief wrong. Every reaction is a natural reaction to something.
