This is the Coast Chapel at Little Bay and I have conducted a number of funerals here. It was built in 1968 as a memorial to the nurses who served in the World Wars.

It’s non denominational, has amazing stained glass windows and the backdrop of the ocean.

It’s a beautiful, quiet spot to say goodbye and I wanted you to see why I love this place.

This week I helped to support two families through funerals. One said goodbye to a 27 year old son. The other, a 45 year old husband. Neither man expected to leave this world so soon.

None of us know how much time we have. But the people we love shouldn’t have to guess what we wanted, when we’re not there to tell them.

This Saturday is Dying to Know Day — a day to talk about the things we usually avoid. It’s not morbid, it’s kind.

So this week, tell someone your wishes or write them down and keep them somewhere they can be found. Do you want to be buried or cremated? Where do you want your ashes scattered? What song would you like played at your funeral?

Start the conversation today. Your wishes matter.

Did you know the tradition of flowers at funerals began as a way to perfume the air and disguise the natural process of decay?

Nowadays we have other ways to manage odours, but the tradition of flowers has remained.

Flowers are now used as a visual expression of sympathy, grief and love for the person who has died — a way to convey emotions when words fail.

Flowers can carry distinct meanings, but the best ones will always be the type and colour your person loved most.

And they don’t have to be made by a florist or be expensive.

Some of the most beautiful arrangements I have seen have been made with love by family members 💐♥️

Motorbike. Horse and carriage. Even the back of the family ute.

There are more ways to say goodbye than most people realise — and the right one is simply the one that feels true to the person being farewelled.

Last week I met a client at Waverley Cemetery.

It’s one of the most beautiful places in Sydney — sitting on the cliffs at Bronte with Victorian and Edwardian monuments and the ocean as a backdrop. Over 100,000 people have been laid to rest here.

My meetings are rarely in an office. Sometimes they’re walking through history with someone, talking about what matters most to their family and for their person.

This is part of what I love about my work — meeting people where they are, in places that mean something.
