Independence looks different for everyone.

It might be learning to catch public transport, preparing part of a meal, communicating a preference or feeling confident enough to join a community activity.

Capacity building is not about removing support. It is about using support intentionally to build skills, confidence and greater choice over time.

Today is World Mental Health Day. 💚

The 2026 theme, Together We Thrive, reminds us that connection can be one of the most powerful ways to support mental health and wellbeing.

Checking in, listening without judgement and helping people feel included can all make a difference. Mental health support should also be accessible, individual and responsive to the different ways people communicate distress.

If you or someone you know needs immediate support, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14. If there is immediate danger, call 000.

Friday Focus: When behaviour changes, stay curious

When someone’s behaviour changes, it can help to pause before making assumptions.

Becoming more withdrawn, irritable, tired or less interested in favourite activities may be a sign that something has changed emotionally, physically or environmentally.

The people who know someone best are often the first to notice that things do not feel quite right. Listening, observing and staying curious can help us see the person beyond the behaviour.

“Progress is not always loud or obvious.”

For helpz Behaviour Support Practitioner Danielle Leek, progress can be found in the quiet victories: making a phone call independently, reconnecting with an activity, trying a new coping strategy or navigating a difficult conversation.

In this reflection, Danielle shares what working alongside people living with brain injury has taught her about resilience, identity and celebrating the small wins.

Friday Focus: When support teams work together

Good support works best when everyone is connected.

Families, teachers, clinicians and other support people each see different parts of a person’s day. When they share what they know, listen to one another and work towards the same goals, support can feel more consistent and easier to use in everyday life.

Collaboration is not about everyone doing the same thing. It is about everyone moving in the same direction.

The brain has an incredible capacity to adapt, learn and form new connections.

This is known as neuroplasticity. Following a brain injury, it can support relearning and the development of new strategies over time.

Recovery is different for every person, but consistent and meaningful opportunities to practise can support progress.

There is often more to brain injury than we can see.

Changes to memory, fatigue, concentration, communication, emotions and planning can affect everyday life long after an injury occurs.

The helpz Disability Awareness Hub looks at these less visible effects, what recovery can involve and practical strategies that may help.

Friday Focus: Progress is not always a straight line.

It can include pauses, setbacks, changing goals and discovering new strategies along the way.

A step that seems small from the outside may represent an enormous achievement for the person taking it.

Rest is not something that needs to be earned.

When sensory, emotional, cognitive or social demands keep building, reduced capacity may be a sign that someone needs less pressure, greater predictability and genuine recovery time.

Recognising burnout early can help us respond with understanding rather than adding more demands.

What if therapy focused less on helping autistic people appear typical and more on helping them feel safe, understood and able to regulate?

In the latest Tharon’s Thoughts, Tharon explores masking, stimming and the relationship between the nervous system and the body through a neuroaffirming lens.
