It may surprise some of you to know that to feel happiness and joy we need to relinquish control. We need to surrender in to the here and now, the present moment. We can not feel joy and happiness if we are worried about the future nor if we are thinking or stuck in the past. Nor can we experience joy if we shut down our emotions. Our brain and body doesn’t have the ability to block out anger, sadness and fear and allow joy through. We can not choose to feel our positive emotions and not our negative ones. Like the duality of life we need to experience the good and the bad, the day and the night, the negative and positive. We need to have access and ability to feel and express all emotions to experience happiness and joy.

As Lowen is saying here, the way to do this is to release tension from the body (the blocks these feelings and keep us in the past). We know from neuroscience that trauma whether large or small is held in the body and the nervous system. This tension keeps us in our past, sometimes leads to feelings of despair as well as an inability to be present as our nervous system is stuck in flight, fright or freeze. The threat is in the past not the present. Breathing is a wonderful way to help regulate our nervous systems and bring us in to the here and now. A gate way to releasing tensions and emotions and allowing us to feel more joy in our lives.

We as human beings are feeling creatures, we are very perceptive of energy and how people make us feel. Whether conscious or unconscious it affects our experiences and feelings. In a world where being busy is glorified, we often find ourselves exhausted, tired, and burnt out. It can be hard to take time to rest, slow down and be in the present moment rather than keep churning through the to do list. Some people say they feel guilty or lazy when not busy. Does the ‘busy-ness of life’ make us happy? Does it connect us with moments of joy? Does it allow us to spend more time doing the things we love with the people we love?

How can we be more present, more embodied, more in the here and now and less in the future or in thoughts and worry? Take a moment, stop, and breathe. Scan through the body and notice sensations in the body. Feel your feet on the floor if you are standing or your bottom on the chair if you are sitting.

Love is a feeling and therefore experienced in the body. The body has a wisdom and an intelligence that the mind doesn’t. As Lowen says the mind can’t control the beating of the heart nor it’s longing.
For true love and fulfilment to be found we need to listen to the body and its wisdom to help direct our life’s course. Maybe it’s self love that needs more focus at the moment, maybe it’s surrendering to the love of another and letting it in. Maybe it’s listening to the body to reconnect with our longings. 💜🙏🏻

If you are looking to improve the health of your relationships and find or foster relationships that nourish you rather than leave you feeling depleted, low in energy, anxious, upset or wound up. Boundaries might be something worth considering. Setting clear boundaries or personal limits help us take care of ourselves and establish with ourselves and others what behaviour we will accept from them and what behaviours they can expect from us.

Boundaries allow us to know where we end and the other begins energetically as well as emotionally and experientially. As human beings we all have different experiences, beliefs and values that are formed by our thoughts, memories and lived experiences. When we are in relationship with others we are connecting energetically and emotionally and often feeling into the other person’s experience. When the line between the other and ourselves gets blurred it’s hard for us to separate what the other is feeling from what we are feeling. Setting boundaries is a healthy way to stay with and honour ourselves. 🙏🏻💜

Respiration can lead to restoration. Breathing can heal damage to the body to promote and encourage optimum health.

Expanding the lungs and using the diaphragm allows oxygenated blood to flow around the body and calm the nervous system. It stimulates the immune response and resets chemoreceptors in the brain. Breathing well allows movement of energy through the body to allow expression of feeling and connection to one's self.

Are you a believer in New Year’s resolutions? The New Year is said to offer a clean slate. For those of you with goals set and ready as you welcome the new year, I’d encourage you to go into them gently and kindly.

I believe in setting intentions, a softer and perhaps more compassionate approach. My focus as I enter this new year is to set intentions that honour the needs of and feel true to my body. This connection and listening to the body helps nourish the most important relationship, the one with ourselves. From here only good things can grow and our relationships with family and friends will grow.

Body Psychotherapy is a combination of psychoanalytics and body work to help individuals see how their pattern of thoughts, feelings or behaviours were formed and lay down in the body. We work with the bodymind to change patterns that were supportive earlier in life but no longer service us.

Elegantly said by the marvellous Esther Perel. Most of the world felt spun on its head when COVID-19 hit. We experienced lockdowns and restrictions as well as financial stress which continues today. The changes we have experienced in the last two and a half years may have affected how free we feel, how safe we feel and how stable our life currently feels.

Esther would ask - When is the last time you felt free? When it comes to feeling safe, I’d also encourage you to ask how do you feel safe in your body? Where do you feel this safety in your body and what does it feel like? Having awareness around sensations in the body can help us know when we do and don’t feel safe. This knowledge can help us learn when to self regulate and what we need.
