As Autism Acceptance Day kicks off worldwide today, I’m sharing my go-to graphic, a yearly tradition I love. ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷

Today, and everyday, we’re all about advocating for every Autistic person and spreading the word on inclusion and acceptance.

Sure, awareness is important, but let’s aim higher than just ‘tolerance.’ Let’s aim for acceptance alongside awareness to truly make a difference.

This month, let’s stay open to change and growth, both in our practices and mindsets. Together, we can make this world a better place.

Things I don’t worry about anymore as a speechie…

• sessions not going to ‘plan’
• kids not sitting at the table
• needing to fill every second of the session
• silence
• doing things differently to other clinicians

We all have our ways of practicing (within the evidence base, of course!), so why do we need to try fit into a box that isn’t meant for us?

What matters more than picture perfect aesthetic and Instagram approved therapy? Connection, trust, and creating a space where kids feel safe to communicate. That’s our goal, at the end of the day.

What’s something you’ve learnt to stop worrying about since your new grad year?

OPEN ALDI MINIS WITH ME

Is this the most cringy and awkward reel I’ve ever done?

Yes.

Do I care?

Nope.

you can have my tomato sauce if you want.

On a side note, these will go great with my minis!

In 2026, we remember to prioritise safety, respect and joy in the therapy room!

Goals are important, don’t get me wrong, but the pressure of meeting goals and being accountable to insurance companies and stakeholders can make us forget the most important part of therapy.

Our kids need to feel safe, respected and be engaged. Without those three elements met, we’re not going to reach our goals. Not just with our neurodivergent kids, but with anyone you work with. No one thrives under stress, in the long run.

So, remember in 2026… you have permission to stop, slow down, and refocus.

2026 is here and therapy is starting up again this week for many people

So this is a timely reminder to all that it is okay if you don’t feel rested enough, ready enough, or want to go back to work. Our work is HARD. Loving it doesn’t stop us needing rest.

And let’s be real, sometimes 2-3 weeks just isn’t quite enough of a reset.

Day 30 – Celebrate Growth!
You’ve made it through 30 days of learning, reflecting, unlearning, and growing.
That’s no small thing.

Whether you implemented one new strategy or rewrote your whole approach — it matters.
Every step you take towards neuroaffirming practice helps build a better future for the clients you support.

✨ Reflect:
What was your biggest learning from this series? What’s your next step?

Day 29 – Audit Your Tools
Take a look at the resources, assessments, and visuals you use.
Are they built around neurotypical norms, or are they adaptable and affirming?

✅ Do they assume eye contact?
✅ Do they treat spoken communication as the gold standard “goal”?
✅ Do they frame difference as deficit?

It can be difficult to use only affirming assessments in a world where government, schools and insurance companies require standardised assessments. However, when possible, we can do our best to use affirming assessments and therapies instead.

✨ Reflect:
What’s one thing you could update or swap to better reflect your affirming values?

Day 28 – Curiosity Over Control
If something in therapy isn’t “working,” instead of doubling down, try getting curious.

❓ Why is the client avoiding this task?
❓ Is the environment overwhelming?
❓ Are their needs unmet or misunderstood?

Control might bring compliance — but curiosity builds understanding, safety, and connection.

✨ Reflect:
What’s one area of your practice where you could choose curiosity over control?

Day 27 – Social Safety & Inclusion > Social Skills
Instead of teaching autistic people how to “fit in,” what if we created safer, more inclusive spaces?

Social safety and inclusion means:
🫱🏽 Feeling accepted
🫱🏽 Having your communication style respected
🫱🏽 Not being forced to mask or perform

✨ Reflect:
Are your social goals focused on belonging — or blending in?
