What’s going on here?

Your rotator cuff (the muscles and tendons that stabilise the shoulder) catches or rubs against the acromion (a bony bit sticking out from the scapula.) When you lift your arm, the fluid-filled space (bursa) between the rotator cuff and acromion narrows, creating pressure, irritation, and PAIN.

The good news is that shoulder impingements generally respond well to treatment.

He was also a grieving husband and father. He dedicated his life to the study of human anatomy after becoming disillusioned with the medicines of his day, which included mercury and arsenic! 💊

Sometimes injury or emotions cause us to hold our breath. Sometimes we just stop breathing as deeply as we should. Athletes and musicians 🎺 train themselves to release and use the respiratory muscles well. But everyone can benefit from breath work.

Try this: Sit or lie comfortably with your hands on your belly. Breathe in slowly, feeling your belly, rib cage and even your back expand. Purse your lips and breathe out to the count of four.

Why not add conscious breath work to your morning routine? You’d be surprised at the calming benefits, and we think it’s a great way to start or end a busy day.

Word of the month: Humerus.
Not the funny bone 🦴 despite the name! It’s the long bone of the upper arm and gets its name not from it’s proximity to the ulnar nerve (which gives you a “funny” feeling when struck) but from the Latin term for shoulder – “Umerus”, which was commonly misspelt as Humerus – luckily they didn’t have spell checkers back then to ruin all the fun!

Who knew this one already?
