An article today on the ABC news site referred to dementia being the highest cause of death amongst women and untreated vision loss is one of the 14 modifiable risk factors.
Eye exams are bulk bulled at our practice so please pop in for an eye test yearly if you are a woman 40 and over.

What is a Stellest lens ?



Stellest is a brand of lens developed by Essilor Luxottica to reduce myopia progression ( shortsightedness) in children .
It is a prescribed lens from an optometrist or ophthalmologist and can be used alone or combined with other treatments to slow down myopia progression like Atropine eye drops or red light therapy.
This lens is different from other single vision lenses to correct shortsightedness because it helps slow down the progression , not just correct vision. It can be fitted into any frame just like regular spectacle lenses.
The Stellest generation 1 lens was launched in 2020 so many clinical trials following kids progression have been completed and the results are this:
Stellest design lenses are effective in slowing down myopia progression and eye ball length over five years.
The results also showed that myopia control was sustained in older children ( up to 18 years old).

In 2026 the Stellest 2.0 lens has been released.
So what's the difference?
This second generation Stellest is even more effective in that it has been shown to slow eyeball length growth by up to 1.88x than Stellest 1.
Eye ball length growth is the precursor to myopia progression so slowing it down controls the prescription and eye health.
If the eyeball stretches too much the eye is prone to retinal and macula problems early in adult life.
So which lens is best for your child?
Luckily a parent doesn't need to make that decision-- we do!! The optoms and opthals.

The Stellest 1 has 6 rings on the lens-- you can see them when you hold the lens up to the light. Stellest 2.0 has 12 rings.
From my experience the setting of these lenses in the frame is crucial to their effectiveness. So while Stellest lenses are sold in many places it is important to have the eye care provider take all the frame measurements and to check the glasses on the child when they pick them up.
Incorrectly fitting the lens is like not taking medication correctly and reducing its effectiveness.

Just finished a seminar on Myopia Progression in children.
The main point I want to get across is to have your child's vision checked annually.

Children don't realise their vision can be abnormal, so only a test will reveal any issues.

Myopia or shortsightedness is becoming an epidemic in first world countries due lifestyle demands , primarily the use of digital devices for long periods of time.

It progresses during childhood and the teenage years and can cause serious eye and vision problems in early adulthood.
Luckily research and technology has developed treatments to halt this progression so kids have healthy eyes and good vision to lead fulfilled lives.
Together we can stop this epidemic of shortsightedness in our kids.
It all starts with an eye test.
The lens below is the Stellest 2.0 and has ben shown to reduce myopia progression by 1.88 c slower than the first generation Stellest lens.
