When a child is struggling, it’s so easy to label the moment as “defiance” or “bad behaviour.” But through an OT lens, we always pause to ask a different question: Is this an intentional choice, or is their nervous system overwhelmed?
Here’s how sensory needs can masquerade as behaviour:
👕 Meltdowns during clothing changes? It might be tactile sensitivity to tags, seams, or tight waistbands.
🍽 Inability to sit still at dinner? Could be postural fatigue (low core strength) or a body craving movement to stay alert.
💥 Crashing into furniture or jumping on the couch? Their body is seeking proprioceptive input (deep pressure) to feel regulated and grounded.
Behaviour is communication. When we look beneath the surface and address the underlying sensory need, we can meet kids with connection instead of frustration. 🤍
