THIS IS INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL WEEK

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Week is held during the third week of October each year to highlight the importance of preventing infections.

The focus for IPC Week 2026 is Past, Present, Prepared for the Future.

Everyone has a role in preventing and controlling infections in health care, and advances in infection prevention and control have significantly improved patient and workforce safety over time. The introduction of universal precautions, then standard precautions, has established a consistent approach to preventing the transmission of infections in healthcare settings.

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Week is an important time for health facilities to review our practices and standards, and it also reminds us to raise awareness with our community about infection prevention and control and what each individual can do when they themselves are in care or if they are caring for somebody.

In the community, simple actions, such as hand hygiene and cough etiquette can make a big difference.

Be proactive - take these small steps which can improve the safety of yourself and those you care for.

October 8 is World Sight Day

Nearly everyone on the planet will experience an eye health issue in their lifetime, yet over a billion people still lack access to the services and treatments they need.

World Sight Day casts a spotlight on the importance of eye care, and what it means to have care that is accessible, available, and affordable to all. It is an annual reminder to ; and in Australia, to recognise how privileged we are to have access to eye care provided by specialist ophthalmologists.

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast start to change and grow abnormally and in an uncontrolled way. A gradual build-up of these cells can form a lump, which is known as a tumour or a mass.

Lumps in the breast can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Unfortunately, if left untreated the primary tumour can spread via the lymph nodes or blood vessels to other parts of the body including the liver, lungs and bones. The spread of cancer can create more tumours around the body which is called metastasis.

1 IN 7 WOMEN AND 1 IN 550 MEN WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER THIS YEAR

Breast cancer is the second largest cause of cancer death in Australian women. Early detection of breast cancer means treatment has a much better chance of success.

The importance of screening and early detection.

*Detecting breast cancer at a localized, early stage yields a five-year relative survival rate of up to 98%, which drops sharply if the cancer spreads to other organs.

*Less Invasive Treatments: Finding small, pre-symptomatic tumours via a mammogram reduces the likelihood of needing a full mastectomy or intensive chemotherapy.

*Pre-Invasive Detection: Screening identifies pre-invasive conditions like Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) before they develop into aggressive disease
