September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month

What is the prostate?

The prostate is a small gland about the size of a walnut and forms part of the male reproductive system. It sits below the bladder and in front of the re**um. Prostate cancer begins when abnormal cells in the prostate start growing in an uncontrolled way and it is the most common cancer in Australian men (except for skin cancer).

What are the risk factors for prostate cancer?

Factors that increase the risk of developing prostate cancer include:
*getting older – especially being aged 50 and over
* family history of prostate, breast or ovarian cancer

Although prostate cancer is less common under the age of 50, it can affect men of any age.

Today’s the day – It’s Daffodil Day!

Daffodil Day is the Cancer Council's annual fundraiser for cancer research. Research can reduce the impact of cancer in many ways; from early detection to revolutionary treatment options and life-changing cancer care.

We take this opportunity to thank our region’s oncological surgical specialists who continue to provide care for our community through their expertise and their commitment to the advancement of services now available in our local area.

Daffodil Day 20 August 2026

This year the Cancer Council celebrates 40 years of growing hope for people affected by cancer through Daffodil Day.

When Daffodil Day first took roots in 1986, the 5-years cancer survival was approximately 46%. Today, thanks to the support of Australian communities fund raising efforts for cancer research – survival is now 72%.

We hope that through awareness initiatives like Daffodil Day that encourage participation and donations, the next 40 years of cancer research will see everyone diagnosed with cancer surviving their diagnosis with a treatment plan that’s just right for them.
