The hidden challenge
Many female athletes are expected to plan careers around peak performance years, often the same years fertility is highest.

Why fertility can be affected
Low energy availability, intense training loads, stress, and missed periods can all signal hormonal disruption that may affect reproductive health.

What needs to change
Some progress is happening, including policies that protect rankings during egg freezing or fertility procedures, but more is needed across all sports. Athletes need education, fertility preservation options, and supportive policies so success in sport doesn’t come at the cost of future family choices.
