Before Optimum's Occupational Therapists recommend a powered wheelchair or custom seating, you get to try the options first. Equipment that looks right in a brochure can still be the wrong fit for your body, your routine or your home. A trial is how you find that out before anything is recommended.

Your first appointment is mostly about getting to know you and your day, including what you'd like to do more easily or more safely and where your current setup gets in the way. From there, we organise trials with suppliers so you can test the equipment in real settings, and we can come to your home when that helps.

We note what worked and what didn't, and we listen to your view, because you're the one who'll be using it. All of that goes into the assessment report, which sets out the reasons behind each recommendation. For the NDIS and most funders, that report and the supplier quotes are what get the equipment approved.

Simple, low-cost items can move faster, and if you're an NDIS participant you can often buy them straight from your plan.

We see NDIS participants and private clients across our clinics in NSW and Tas. Call us on 1800 678 647 to book an assessment, or tap the link in the comments.

Wondering whether something "counts" as assistive technology? It probably does. Assistive technology is anything that helps you do a task you find hard, or do it more safely, and it runs from a rail beside the shower through to a powered wheelchair, custom seating or a communication device.

Where an item sits on that range changes how you get it. If you're an NDIS participant, you can often buy simple, low-cost items straight from your plan without a long report. Higher-cost equipment usually needs a written assessment from an Occupational Therapist, plus supplier quotes, before it's funded.

Optimum's Occupational Therapists start with the tasks that matter to you, then organise trials with suppliers so you can test equipment in real settings before anything is recommended. For communication devices, our Speech Pathologists assess the options, and an Occupational Therapist works alongside them on how you reach and use the device.

We see NDIS participants and private clients across our clinics in NSW and Tas, and we can come to your home when that helps the assessment. If you're not sure how your funding covers it, call us on 1800 678 647 and we'll talk it through before you book, or tap the link in the comments.

Has your GP or paediatrician suggested paediatric physiotherapy for your baby?

Paediatric physiotherapy is physiotherapy for babies, children and adolescents who find movement, strength, coordination or balance harder than they would like. For babies, one common reason is holding their head to one side, which is often a tight neck called torticollis. Another is when rolling, sitting, crawling or walking is taking longer than you expected.

If you're picturing something clinical, a first appointment with Optimum's Physiotherapists is mostly play. They watch how your baby moves, ask what you're noticing and what you'd like to see, and set goals with you from there.

You don't usually need a referral to book. We see children of any age, from newborns to teenagers, in clinic, at home, at school and in the community across NSW and Tas. Families fund sessions through the NDIS, private health extras, or Medicare with a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, which starts with your GP.

You'll find more on our paediatric physiotherapy page through the link in our comments, or you can call us on 1800 678 647.

"Am I actually getting stronger, or am I just doing the exercises?"

If you have been at this a while, you have probably had that thought on the drive home from a session, and had no real way to answer it.

Here is the part that makes it hard. A practitioner watching you squat can see a great deal, and still not see that your right leg is carrying most of it. Sides compensate quietly, and neither of you feels it happening.

So Optimum's Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists measure it as well as watch it. You stand on force plates that read each foot separately, eyes open, then closed, then on one leg. You push and pull against AxIT dynamometers at the joints that matter for what you want to be able to do. Then you squat, lunge and step while the plates record what each leg is carrying.

What comes back is a number rather than an impression: how much force you produced, how fast it built, and which side is doing more of the work.

Next time, the same tests are run the same way. That comparison is what answers the question you had on the drive home.

Testing runs in one appointment at our clinics across NSW and Tas. Most people fund it through the NDIS from Capacity Building, under Improved Daily Living, and Medicare, DVA and private health all work too.

Has "you go ahead, I'll catch up" become a regular line on the walk from the car, for you or someone you care for?

It's a line our Physiotherapists hear often from people living with COPD, bronchiectasis or asthma, and from people whose breathing muscles are affected by conditions like motor neurone disease or muscular dystrophy.

Respiratory Physiotherapy is hands-on and practical. Optimum's Physiotherapists teach airway clearance, like huffing and the active cycle of breathing, along with breathing retraining such as pursed-lip breathing. These are techniques you can practise and use yourself at home. Supervised exercise then works on building your strength and stamina, so everyday activity can start to feel more manageable.

Sessions run in clinic and at home across NSW and Tas. You can book privately with no referral, claim through many private health extras policies, use a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan through Medicare, or use NDIS funding if a significant, permanent disability affects your breathing.

Give us a call on 1800 678 647, or the referral link is in the comments.

"I need help in the shower" can mean two very different things.

One person needs a support worker in the room for the whole task. Another showers on their own once there's a rail or a shower chair. Same statement but a requirment of very different supports, and very different costs in a plan.

A functional capacity assessment is what tells the two apart and helps decision makers allocate the right amount of funding.

Our Occupational Therapists spend about a few hours with you, usually in your own home, and look at six areas of daily life: personal care, moving around, running a home, thinking and planning, communication, and taking part in the community. Each task is rated on a level of independence scale, so a reader who has never met the person gets the picture quickly.

While no report can every guarantee funding, a comprehensive functional capacity assessment can help.

Referrals can be made through our Referrers Hub where you can also see where we currently have immediate capacity (availability). Follow the link in the comments or call us on 1800 678 647.

Every home modification we work on moves through the same four stages, whether it's a couple of grab rails or a bathroom rebuilt for wheelchair access.

Here's how each stage runs at Optimum Health Solutions.

THE HOME VISIT:
- Your Occupational Therapist comes to your home and sees how you use it: getting in the front door, managing the bathroom, and the tight spots along the way. They'll ask what you want to be able to do more easily, then measure the spaces that matter.

THE REPORT:
- Next, they work out which changes will help and write a report explaining each one and why. Every change ties back to your goals, because that link is what the NDIS looks for. The NDIA makes the funding decision, and an assessment doesn't guarantee approval. Please don't start any building work before the NDIS approves the funding, because work started early may not be covered.

THE BUILDER
On bigger jobs, your Occupational Therapist works alongside the builder so the rail heights, door widths and turning space match what was planned. We have contracted builders across NSW and Tas, which can shorten the wait for quotes and construction.

SIGN OFF
Once the work is finished, your Occupational Therapist checks it over and shows you how to get the most from it. If something isn't right, we'll sort it.

Your Occupational Therapist stays with you through all four stages, so there's one person to ask about anything. You'll also know what's coming next, including when we're waiting on the NDIS or a builder.

On funding, NDIS home modifications come from the Capital Supports part of a plan, separate from the day-to-day support budget. We work with self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed plans.

Older people can get home modifications funded through the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications scheme under the aged care Support at Home program. You can also pay for an assessment and report privately, with no plan needed.

Renting doesn't rule anyone out either.

The NDIS needs written consent from the property owner, and we can help with that request.

Support Coordinators can refer at opt.net.au/referrers-hub, and participants and families can call us on 1800 678 647.

Some people with cerebral palsy have no easy way to say "this hurts" or "I need a break", so their behaviour communicates their needs instead.

Pain is common and it's rarely obvious from the outside: muscle tightness, joint changes, hip problems and reflux.

When their speech is affected, pain can go unmanaged for a long time.

Often it's their environment that needs to change, not the person in it.

A plan built on analysing behaviour alone is at risk of missing what's driving it.

So at Optimum, our Behaviour Support practitioners look to understand pain, communication, fatigue and environmental triggers across several sessions in natural settings, and your behaviour support plan is built on what that assessment finds.

Behaviour Support is funded through Capacity Building in an NDIS plan: a Behaviour Support budget in PACE plans, Improved Relationships in older ones.

Optimum Health Solutions is a registered NDIS provider across NSW and TAS, working alongside Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Exercise Physiology, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and Nursing.

Support Coordinators, live capacity and referral forms are in our Referrers Hub - link in bio.

If you, or someone you care for, needs home modifications, then you shouldn't need to also be the project manager.

Unfortunately, this is something that we hear all the time. One OT writes the report, someone else finds a builder, someone else again chases the funding approval, then someone else comes and signs off on the final product, leaving you as the only one holding all the pieces together.

At Optimum, our Occupational Therapists take care of the whole job: the home assessment, the report, organising the quote from our contracted builders, and providing sign-off on the handover at the end. You have one person to call, from the first visit to the last.

That covers basic modifications, like grab rails and ramps, right through to complex modifications such as full bathroom rebuilds and doorway widening.

We service pretty much all over NSW and TAS, and accept participants who are funded through NDIS, Aged Care Support at Home or privately.

Have you ever known exactly what you wanted to say, but the word just would not come, no matter how clearly you could hear it in your head? For someone who stutters, that can be every conversation. And if you are a parent watching your child get stuck mid-sentence, repeating a sound or pushing against a block while nothing comes out, it can be hard to know whether to wait, jump in, or say nothing at all.

Stuttering starts in the brain's speech pathways. It often runs in families, it usually appears between the ages of two and four, and none of it is a choice.

Support has a clear shape. Optimum's Speech Pathologists use two Australian programs: the Lidcombe Program for preschool children, and the Camperdown Program for teenagers and adults. The goal is comfortable, confident communication, not erasing every stutter.

Optimum's Speech Pathology team works with toddlers through to adults who stutter across NSW and Tas, and accepts NDIS, Medicare, DVA and private health cover.

If that sounds like you, or like your child, call 1800 678 647 or use the link in the comments.
