Mick is hard to write about.
Partly because he is not a typical glossy yoga teacher. He can be blunt, very funny, and might make you roll your eyes. He will say the thing no one else wants to say. He has no interest in looking spiritual, which is probably why people trust him with the work. But mostly he is hard to write about because what he knows has not come from image, theory, or clever language. It has come from decades spent teaching.
Mick has been teaching yoga for more than 20 years and training teachers for over 15. Which means he has seen a lot. People who can’t touch their toes. People who think being hypermobile means they’re “good at yoga”. People recovering from injuries. People scared of being seen. People who want to teach but don’t yet know how to speak in front of a room. People who think they know everything. People just trying to get through the week.
You don’t teach that many people for that many years and stay interested in making shapes. Eventually you become interested in what is actually going on.
Ask anyone who’s spent time at The Yoga Factory and they’ll probably say some version of this: Mick is very good at getting underneath the pose, underneath the plan, underneath the performance of being a yoga person. Not always delicately. Sometimes very directly. But usually in a way that makes you go, annoyingly, “yes, okay, fair.”
That is where the teacher training comes from.
It is not about becoming a smaller version of Mick. Please don’t.
It is about learning how to teach what is in front of you. To understand what sits behind a sequence. To know not only how to assist, but when. To modify for different bodies. To keep your head when the class in front of you is not the class you planned.
Many of our teachers started here as students. They practiced, did the training, stayed with it, and eventually began teaching. They are all different, which is the best thing about it.
That probably says enough.
