👏 Congratulations to our Founder and Chief Science and Strategy Officer, Professor David Thomas, on being elected a 2026 Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences!

David has dedicated much of his career to an ambition that sits at the heart of Omico 's work: translating advances in cancer science into better care, and enabling more equitable access to precision oncology for Australians who need it.

His contributions span cancer genetics, inherited cancer risk and the development of precision oncology approaches that can open up new possibilities for patients.

From research to routine care: the role of ’s cohort research

Cancer research takes many forms. It can involve testing new medicines in clinical trials, studying cancer biology in the laboratory, or following groups of people (cohorts) over time to understand how advances in science can improve cancer care.

At Omico, cohort research is central to our work.

Through our research initiatives, we bring advances in genomics and precision oncology to thousands of Australians with cancer or at risk of cancer.

Across our cohorts, we investigate whether and how advances in precision oncology can reduce cancer risk, detect cancer earlier, provide more treatment options and improve outcomes. We collect and study genomic, clinical, treatment and outcomes information over time, generating the evidence needed to help translate effective approaches into routine cancer care.

Omico’s cohort research initiatives include MoST, PrOSPeCT + CaSP, RiSC and SMOC+, each addressing different questions across cancer care.

None of this research happens without people choosing to take part.

This , we acknowledge the 35,000 Australians who have participated in Omico’s cohort research initiatives, and the clinicians, researchers and partners working with us to turn advances in cancer science into evidence that can improve care.

🩵 Every 15 minutes, another Australian with incurable cancer is referred to Omico.

Responding to that need takes more than a genomic test. It takes referral pathways, clinical interpretation, treatment matching, access to trials and therapies, data, research and a national network working together.

Over more than a decade, Omico has helped build that capability across Australia, while also advancing research for people and families facing inherited cancer risk.

We have created a unique national asset of knowledge, infrastructure, partnerships, data and evidence that can help shape how Australia responds to cancer now and into the future.

Being named a finalist for NGO of the Year in the 2026 Health Industry Hub Awards reinforces why this work matters, and why we need to keep working to bring the latest scientific advances and evidence into the routine care of Australians facing cancer.

🧬 How can Australia keep pace with rapid advances in cancer science, while improving access, equity and affordability?

At , Omico’s Professor David Thomas highlighted two areas where change could make a significant difference.

⬆️ First, expanding Australia’s clinical trials capacity and participation, so more people can access emerging treatments and Australia can play a greater role in generating the evidence behind them.

But clinical trials alone cannot solve the access challenge.

🔗 David proposed a national that could connect clinical research, access to innovative treatments and the generation of real-world evidence to support decisions about broader implementation.

Importantly, this could provide earlier and more equitable access to promising treatments while generating the evidence needed to understand their value, costs and impact before they become part of mainstream care.

As David put it, a Learning Health System could “derisk major reform”, allowing Australia to gather essential evidence while providing equitable access.

The pieces already exist across Australia’s health and research system. The opportunity is to connect and harness them.

🧬 Precision oncology can only improve cancer care if people can access it.

Omico and GenesisCare are working together to help more Australians facing advanced, incurable or poor-prognosis cancers access comprehensive genomic profiling and explore potential treatment options based on the individual features of their cancer.

Eligible GenesisCare patients can now be referred by their oncologist to Omico’s Cancer Screening Program (CaSP), which provides comprehensive genomic profiling at no cost and identifies potential matches to targeted treatments and clinical trials.

A big thank you to the GenesisCare team — it’s been great working together on this collaboration

And by participating, patients also contribute to research that can help improve our understanding of cancer and advance care for people in the future.

Last week at Rare Cancers Australia’s , we heard from people living with rare cancers and their families, sharing the realities of unequal access to treatment and the personal cost when progress in cancer care does not reach everyone.

We also heard about advances in science and technology that continue to create new possibilities for cancer care.

For Omico, that reinforces the work ahead: continuing to tackle the gaps between scientific discovery, clinical research and access to treatment, and looking at how we can make the whole system work better.

As Omico’s Professor David Thomas highlighted in his presentation, “the pieces already exist. What is needed is a way to connect and harness them”.

🩵 One program worth fighting for.

Omico and Cube Public Relations have been named finalists in the 2026 PRIME Awards, for Best PR Campaign – Awareness and Advocacy.

Our campaign supported the continuation of PrOSPeCT, Omico’s national precision oncology program providing genomic profiling and treatment matching for Australians with advanced, incurable or poor-prognosis cancers — access that is not yet routinely funded in Australia.

Through patient voices, evidence and advocacy, we worked to build understanding of why PrOSPeCT matters — and why Australians who may benefit need continued access to precision oncology.

🩵 Being named a PRIME finalist gives that message another platform, and that’s a win in itself. 🩵

❓ How do we help ensure Australians with challenging cancers can continue to access precision oncology?

That was the challenge behind a months-long, integrated campaign by Omico and Cube Public Relations to support the continuation of PrOSPeCT.

We brought together evidence, patient stories, media and advocacy — including the launch of Omico’s inaugural Impact Report at Parliament House — to demonstrate why continued investment in PrOSPeCT matters.

🏆 That work has now been named a finalist in the 2026 Golden Target Awards – Public Affairs and Advocacy Campaign.

Great to see this important work recognised, and to share the recognition with our partners at Cube Public Relations
🩵 And hopefully, it helps more people understand precision oncology and why access to it matters. 🩵
