When Lila was diagnosed with cancer, Chloe’s focus was on being by her side - protecting and advocating for her as her mum and making sure she felt safe and loved. She never saw herself as a carer.

The family spent months away from home while Lila received treatment, navigating uncertainty and financial pressures after Chloe had to stop work, while trying to maintain some normality for Lila’s two older sisters.

“Looking back, I don’t know how we managed it all as a family, but we did, because we simply had to.”

“I’m grateful that, even during the most challenging times, I was able to bring moments of happiness to Lila. I feel incredibly privileged to have been by her side every day.”

Family and friends stepped in when they were needed most. Their school and sporting communities, alongside Lila’s medical team, supported the family through some of their hardest days.

“We will forever be grateful for the kindness and compassion we received.”

“When the caring journey ends, as did ours with the heartbreaking passing of our precious Lila, its impact remains with you.”

Chloe hopes to support other families through their own caring journeys 💙

“Young people don’t always need us to have the answers or immediately fix their problems.”

This World Mental Health Day, meet Rahul Nanwani, Chief Psychiatry Registrar at the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network.

Along with his team, Rahul supports young people experiencing significant mental health difficulties. Working closely with families, schools, hospitals and community services, he takes a holistic approach that considers each young person’s development, relationships, culture and life experiences.

His message to parents and carers is to create an environment where children feel safe to talk without fear of being judged or dismissed.

“Sometimes, simply listening, acknowledging their feelings and letting them know they’re not alone can make a real difference.”

“Children and young people don’t always express emotional distress through words. Sometimes it comes through changes in behaviour, withdrawal, irritability, difficulties at school or changes in sleep and appetite.

Rather than focusing only on the behaviour, Rahul encourages us to be curious about what might be happening underneath. Recognising changes early and reaching out for support can make a real difference.

For mental health support, call the NSW Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511. It’s available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In an emergency, call triple zero (000) 💚

Babies cry 🧑🏻‍🍼
Sometimes for hours and for no obvious reason.

While crying is a normal part of development, it can be exhausting and overwhelming for parents and carers.

If you feel yourself becoming frustrated, remember:

Tag out – ask someone you trust to take over.
Step out – place your baby safely in their cot and leave the room for a few minutes.
Reach out – talk to someone you trust or seek professional support.

It’s okay to say, “I need a break.”

September is 🎗️Each year, more than 1,000 children in Australia are diagnosed with childhood cancer.

One of those children is Penelope.

At just four years old, Penny was diagnosed with a form of Leukaemia and faced a battle no child should ever have to endure. Her treatment journey was filled with challenges, including losing her ability to walk for several months after treatment began.

But nothing could dampen Penny’s vibrant spirit, determination, and positivity.

Through it all, she became a source of strength and inspiration for her family and everyone around her. Looking back on her journey, Penny is proud of everything she has overcome and says,

“I’m unique because I defeated cancer”.

On 16 October, Penny will reach an incredible milestone when she rings the bell to mark the end of her treatment. And if you ask her, she’s planning on ringing it as hard as she can.

After a long journey of courage, resilience and perseverance, Penny and her family are looking forward to celebrating with a well-deserved overseas adventure.

Congratulations, Penny! We are proud of everything you’ve achieved and can’t wait to hear the bell ring loud and proud 🔔✨
