The international study led by Mayo Clinic and Flo App earlier this year was the largest perimenopause study to date, and gave us some important reality checks. The report was underscored by a significant gap between what women expect perimenopause to feel like, and what it actually feels like.

Women are experiencing symptoms earlier and more intensely than expected.
Symptoms are also getting dismissed more often than they should be by family, doctors, friends and even themselves.

Doctors aren’t a scapegoat here. Most GPs get about ten minutes with you and limited training in this specific hormonal stage. Sometimes the level of care and detail needed can’t be met under such a time crunch.
While we wait for the the system to catch up, here’s what you can do to maximise the time you do have:

1. track your symptoms across a couple of cycles,
2. get specific (sleep, mood, cycle, skin — whatever it is)
3. Bring that list to your next appointment instead so you can tackle your specific concern with your practitioner right away

If you want more than ten minutes to actually be heard, That’s what a micro-consult® with an Anni practitioner is for. No waitlist, no Dr Google spiral.

Save this for your next appointment

Out of the seven things women’s health stopped guessing about this week, our team was surprised by this one:
A new analysis of the Framingham Heart Study (6,760 women, 14 years) found the rise in pulse pressure we’ve long blamed on menopause actually begins in women’s late 30s - regardless of when menopause hits (American Heart Association, Hypertension, 14 Sep 2026). It’s observational, so it shows a pattern rather than a cause. The takeaway is clear: heart health starts earlier than we’ve been told.

Also this week:
🔴 The world’s first international standard on menstruation + menopause at work launched — and ISO made it free (7 Sep).
🔴 Menopause was documented in only ~7% of nearly 396,000 women’s health records. We can’t treat what we don’t measure.
🔴 A UCL analysis of 201 menopause supplements found limited evidence, wild dosing and £1.50–£95 price tags (UK data).
🔴 Cedars-Sinai found the small-bowel microbiome differs by s*x. One bacteria community appeared only in women.
🔴 Continuous hormone monitoring inched closer, and Norway’s biggest bank launched a global women’s health fund.

The theme? Measure it properly, or stop guessing.

Some women are posing as men just to get their hormones. That’s where menopause care is at. 🩺

A Welsh menopause specialist says patchy NHS access is pushing women to buy testosterone online — some turning up with levels up to 12× the safe range, risking permanent side effects. The problem isn’t the hormone. It’s a system where whether you get treated depends on your postcode.

The rest of this week’s access story:

→ The US FDA confirmed a demand-driven squeeze on oestradiol (MHT) patches — supply’s nearly doubled in a year after a Nov 2025 US labelling change (an American regulatory move; AU prescribing is unchanged).
→ A small UCLA study (20 women, no placebo group) found a year of estriol + progesterone eased brain fog, memory and focus — promising, but read it as an early signal, not a verdict: the lead researcher has commercial ties to the treatment.
→ A Canadian survey of 2,045 adults found 53% of women live with a chronic condition and 64% struggle to raise health topics with their GP — among Gen Z women with a chronic illness, 92% have had to repeat their full history to a new provider.
→ Oura’s IPO filing shows ~72% of its 5M paid members are women, revenue up 74% to US$1.21B — its menopause tracker now feeding real clinical referral pathways.
→ Spain’s iPremom raised EUR15M for a blood test targeting preeclampsia (which affects up to ~8% of pregnancies) from as early as nine weeks.
→ And the Australasian Menopause Society congress lands in Sydney this week (11–13 Sep) — a rare menopause headline on home soil.

New reporting this week found a growing number of Australian women in their late 30s to 50s are drinking more heavily during perimenopause. This is often to self-soothe anxiety they can’t quite explain (ABC News/AAP, 15 Aug 2026).

Addiction specialist Dr Chris Davis, co-founder of the Clean Slate Clinic, says most of his patients are women in this age bracket, despite men being statistically twice as likely to have an alcohol use disorder. His explanation: alcohol and progesterone both stimulate GABA production in the brain. As progesterone declines in perimenopause, reaching for alcohol can feel like chasing the same calming effect.

This isn’t about willpower it’s about It’s neuroscience and deserves to be talked about as openly as any other perimenopause symptom.

Nearly 6 in 10 women aged 18–29 say they get health and wellness information from social media influencers and it’s 10% higher than young men their age (Pew Research Center, US survey, July 2026).
We get why. When appointments are rushed and the question feels embarrassing, a familiar face on your phone can feel easier than a stranger in scrubs.

But here’s the catch: young women are also far more likely to be served beauty content and sponsored product placement dressed up as health advice. Often, there’s no expert, no evidence and no accountability behind it.

You shouldn’t have to choose between a GP who has eight minutes for you and a stranger with a ring light and a theory.

Dry eyes. Aching joints. Brain fog. A gut that’s suddenly gone rogue. Been told to just push through these “discomforts”?

Here’s what Hollywood skips: perimenopause is so much more than hot flushes.

As your ostrogen shifts, the ripple can reach places you’d never think to be affected by hormones like your joints, your focus, your gut, even your eyes.

It may not be “just getting older,” and it’s not something you have to white-knuckle on your own.

Luckily, there’s someone for the piece that’s bugging you
🌷 Gut gone rogue → nutritionists like Green & Well Nutrition & Dr Andrea Robertson - Osteopath/Naturopath/Nutritionist/Barre
🌷Skin not itself → Skin experts like Dua | South Morang Skin Specialist & DERMAL CLINICIAN SUNSHINE COAST
🌷S*x becoming dry, painful and not that appealing -> Qualified s*xologists
🌷 Foggy, wired, restless → Sleep and stress experts

And some of these are worth a chat with your GP too - we’re here alongside your care, never instead of it.
A micro-consult® is a small, no-judgement way to get real support for what’s actually going on.

Constantly forgetting your nieces name? Clothes fitting uncomfortably all of a sudden? Staring at the ceiling till 3am? You’re not alone.

The hormonal changes that happen in perimenopause can exacerbate burnout, exhaustion and contribute to the low level “off” feeling that brain fog, weight gain and insomnia create. Learning about why you’re experiencing these symptoms and what can be done about them is exactly what Anni was built for. You don’t have to navigate this alone, there are professionals a click away to make it better.

Perimenopause comes wrapped in a lot of myths — and believing them can leave you second-guessing what your body’s telling you.

A few worth retiring:
→ It’s not just a “your 50s” thing — for some women it can begin years earlier.
→ It’s so much more than hot flushes. Brain fog, anxiety, rage, joint pain, broken sleep — it can show up in ways you’d never connect to hormones.
→ You don’t have to just push through. The right specialist support can make a real difference.

You deserve someone who actually gets it — not a 15-minute window and a “let’s wait and see“
