Itβs Swallowing Awareness Day!
We often take swallowing for granted, but it is one of the most complex functions the body carries out... hundreds of times a day, even while we sleep.
Swallowing begins early, too. Even a foetus in utero is swallowing amniotic fluid from around 11 weeks gestation. πΆπ½
It is also vitally important. Not only does swallowing help provide nutrition, but when timed properly, it helps protect food and fluid from entering the lungs. π«
In Australia, Speech Pathologists are the health professionals trained in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders (or dysphagia) across the lifespan, from birth onwards. We also work collaboratively with doctors and other allied health professionals.
Feeding and swallowing is a complex area that changes with age and development. Speech Pathologists working in infant and paediatric feeding often need further training beyond their degrees to develop the specific knowledge and skills required to best support babies and children.
Up to 25β45% of typically developing children, 40% of children born premature, and 80% of children with developmental disabilities and chronic medical conditions experience feeding or swallowing difficulties at some point.
Some signs of feeding and swallowing difficulties may include:
π© Sucking, swallowing or breathing difficulties with breastfeeding or bottle feeding
π© Long feeds or mealtimes, or getting tired while eating or drinking
π© Feed refusal, aversion, or distress around eating
π© Difficulty transitioning to solids, lumpy foods, or chewable foods
π© Coughing, choking, or gagging on food or drink, or a feeling of food getting βstuckβ
π© Fussy, picky, or selective eating that impacts the child or family
π© Delays in feeding skill development
π© Recurring chest infections or pneumonia without a known cause
If you are concerned about your childβs feeding or swallowing, please reach out to a Speech Pathologist with additional expertise in infant and/or paediatric feeding.
At Babble & Munch, we support families through in-clinic and Australia-wide Telehealth feeding therapy, and we also provide training and mentoring for Speech Pathologists and other health professionals around the world in feeding therapy. π
