I arrived with questions. Mum arrived with opinions.

I wanted to know about practicalities, future plans and how everything worked. She wanted to know where her piano would go, whether the afternoon light reached the sitting room and which table would best suit Sunday lunch.

By the end of the visit, I realised she was not asking me to solve retirement for her. She was inviting me to understand the life she could see herself choosing.

Adult children can bring care, research and perspective to the conversation. The

The answer need not be impressive. Read past breakfast. Walk when the streets are quiet. Book lunch without checking the office calendar. Swim before anyone expects a reply, or leave the day deliberately unstructured.

Life after full-time work is often described through major plans: travel, projects and long awaited ambitions. Yet one of its deepest pleasures is much smaller: the ordinary weekday returned to its owner.

The first outdoor lunch of spring is rarely planned far in advance.

One person notices the warmth. Another carries the glasses outside. A bowl of lemons becomes the centrepiece and the menu suddenly matters less than the fact that everyone can remain in the sun for another hour.

It began with two coffees.

A neighbour passing through the garden stopped to say hello, and a third chair was drawn into the sun. Twenty minutes became an hour. Weekend plans were compared, a restaurant was recommended and somebody remembered a story too good not to retell.

Community is often portrayed through organised events and full rooms. Its truest expression may be much smaller: people who have time for one another and a chair that can always be added.

It may be the way he folded a newspaper, chose a bottle for dinner or insisted that shoes should be properly polished.

Perhaps it is his eye for timber, his habit of arriving early or the chair he always claimed after lunch.

Spring offers a persuasive argument for change.

Keep what is still growing. Prune what has become burdensome. Make room before adding something new. Open the windows. Follow the light. Accept that not everything blooms on the same schedule. Begin before conditions feel perfect.

These lessons belong equally to gardens, homes and life decisions.

A new season does not demand reinvention. It simply invites us to notice what feels ready and to give it the space required to flourish.

The end of winter seldom announces itself decisively in Wahroonga.

Instead, light remains a little longer over the gardens. New growth appears almost unnoticed. Doors stay open for another few minutes in the afternoon, and conversations begin drifting outside again.
