This World Alzheimer’s Month, we are reminded that communication is not always verbal.

For people living with dementia, distress or changes in behaviour may be a sign that something is wrong. When we see behaviour as communication, we can begin to identify unmet needs, including pain, and respond with greater understanding and compassion.

Every person deserves to have their pain recognised and their voice heard.

When someone can no longer tell us “I’m in pain,” their face, voice, movement and behaviour may communicate it for them.

A change in routine. A new vocalisation. Reduced activity. Guarding a part of the body. Each could be an important clue that deserves closer attention.

During World Alzheimer’s Month, PainChek is encouraging care professionals to remain curious about changes in behaviour and to ask: Could this person be in pain?

Because recognising pain is an essential part of protecting dignity, comfort and quality of life for people living with dementia.

This blog is the first in a series which examines practical examples of how current clients in the UK are achieving their outcomes.

This edition examines how providers are reducing falls by identifying unrecognised pain with PainChek. Pain is a significant driver of falls in care homes, especially with lower leg pain. If this pain isn't properly identified and managed, falls and, therefore, injuries can occur unnecessarily. This can result in decreased quality of life, increased level of hospital admissions, and sometimes placement breakdowns.

Improving the way you identify pain, especially for those living with a cognitive impairment, is the crucial first step in effectively managing pain and avoiding significant incidents further down the line.

Discover how PainChek reduces falls in care homes through earlier pain detection, better resident outcomes and stronger financial resilience.

On International Nurses Day, we want to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

We see first-hand the dedication you bring every day; the patience, the presence, the hard clinical calls made across a full shift, for every individual who needs you.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have nurses Dawn Kerr and Catherine Smith as part of our clinical team, bringing their expertise and compassion into everything we do.

Dawn shares: “Nursing is advocating for people at their most vulnerable, especially when they can’t articulate what they’re feeling. As part of the PainChek team I continue the work I’m passionate about, supporting consistent recognition of pain so people are better understood and their care remains person-centred."

Catherine adds: "Dementia care carries an enormous responsibility, and every decision shapes someone’s dignity, comfort, and sense of self. I’m proud to be part of a team committed to supporting nurses with tools that help ensure people living with dementia remain seen, heard, and cared for as individuals."

Today is a reminder of the impact of nurses’ work. You make a real difference.
