Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is being renamed PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
The change has been proposed to better reflect the true nature of the condition. Many experts feel the term “PCOS” can be misleading, as not everyone with the condition has ovarian cysts, and the syndrome involves much more than the ovaries alone.
PMOS acknowledges the broader hormonal, metabolic and ovulatory aspects of the condition, which may include:
• Irregular menstrual cycles
• Ovulation difficulties
• Elevated androgen levels
• Insulin resistance and metabolic symptoms
• Polycystic appearing ovaries
While the name is changing, the focus remains the same, supporting women through diagnosis, symptom management, fertility care and long-term health.
You may continue to see both terms used during this transition period as clinics, researchers and published materials adopt the updated terminology.
