Depression Doesn't Always Look Like Depression.
Sometimes, it hides behind a smile.
The Biggest Smile Can Hide the Deepest Pain.
The strongest-looking people are sometimes fighting the hardest battles.
One of the biggest myths about depression is that you'll always recognise it.
The truth? You often won't.
Someone living with depression may...
✔️ Go to work every day.
✔️ Smile and laugh with friends.
✔️ Take care of their family.
✔️ Post happy photos on social media.
Yet behind that smile, they may feel emotionally exhausted, hopeless, or completely alone.
Depression doesn't always look the way people expect.
That's why asking, "How are you, really?" can mean far more than we realise.
Instead of assuming someone is okay because they look happy, take a moment to genuinely connect with them.
📞 Call your parents.
💬 Message a friend.
☕ Invite someone for coffee.
❤️ Tell the people you love that you're thinking about them.
You may never fully know what someone is carrying, but a simple conversation can remind them they don't have to carry it alone.
And if you're the one struggling...
Please don't suffer in silence.
You deserve support just as much as anyone else.
At The Psyche Space Counselling, we provide compassionate, evidence-informed online counselling to help individuals and couples navigate depression, anxiety, grief, overthinking, relationship challenges, and life's difficult seasons.
Healing often begins with one conversation.
Maybe today is the day to start one.
💡 MYTH → MINDSET SHIFT
❌ Myth
"If they're smiling, they must be okay."
✅ Reality
Many people with depression become incredibly good at hiding their pain because they don't want to worry others or feel like a burden.
Never assume someone's smile tells the whole story.
Choose curiosity.
Choose kindness.
Choose connection.
How to check in with someone you care about
🤍 Reach out instead of waiting for them to ask for help.
🤍 Ask open-ended questions like, "How have you really been lately?"
🤍 Listen without judgement or rushing to solve the problem.
🤍 Encourage them to seek professional support if they're struggling.
If someone has been struggling for a while, gently encourage them to speak with a trusted health professional or counsellor.
Small conversations can make a meaningful difference.
🤍 Save this post as a reminder to check in with the people you love.
