Ear wax build up symptoms, and the signs it's something else 👂

Wax usually feels like:

✅ A full or blocked ear
✅ Muffled hearing
✅ Itching, an ache, or ringing

It's more likely if you wear hearing aids or earplugs, have narrow ear canals, work somewhere dusty, or you're older.

But it's probably NOT just wax if:

⚠️ You've lost hearing suddenly in one ear. Go to ED
⚠️ It's painful with discharge or fever. See your GP
⚠️ The room is spinning. Wax can make you feel off balance, but it's rarely behind true vertigo

Microsuction vs syringing: what's actually different? 👂

💧 Syringing (irrigation)
Body-temperature water flushes the wax out. It's a recognised method, but it isn't suitable for everyone, including people with a perforated eardrum, grommets, a mastoid cavity, or only one working ear.

🔬 Microsuction
The ear is viewed directly through a microscope and the wax is lifted out with gentle suction. No water.

Both are recognised ways to remove wax. The right one depends on your ears and your history. If you've been told syringing isn't for you, microsuction is the other option.

Hearing Services Program eligibility, explained in plain English 👂

The Hearing Services Program is run by the Australian Government. It provides subsidized hearing services and devices to eligible people.

You'll generally need to be 21 or older, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and in an eligible group, such as Pensioner Concession Card holders, DVA Gold Card holders, some DVA White Card holders, and serving ADF members. A Commonwealth Seniors Health Card doesn't qualify on its own. Vouchers last 5 years.

Got ringing in your ears too? Mention it. We offer tinnitus assessment and management, and eligible veterans can get additional support through DVA, including tinnitus treatment.

Sudden hearing loss in one ear is urgent. Don't wait for it to pop ⚠️

Blocked and stuffy after a cold or a flight? That's common and usually settles on its own.

This is different:

1️⃣ It happens suddenly, often overnight or over a day or two
2️⃣ It's in ONE ear
3️⃣ It doesn't feel stuffy. The sound is just gone or dull, sometimes with ringing or dizziness

If your new job's onboarding says “hearing test required”, you can do it with us in Castle Hill. Three things make it quick:

1️⃣ Your employer's form or instructions. Different employers ask for different things2️⃣ Photo ID3️⃣ A quiet day before. Skip the loud gig, the power tools or the mower if you can. Loud noise can temporarily dull your hearing and throw off your result

If a teacher has mentioned “listening”, or you noticed any of Monday's signs (loud TV, loud talking, lots of daydreaming, watching your face), this is the easiest few days to check.

What the test involves:

🎧 Listening to sounds through headphones🔊 For kids who won't keep headphones on, sounds through speakers instead🗣️ A speech test, to see how well they pick out words

Did an online hearing test tell you to “see a professional”? Here's why 👂

An online check plays tones through your earbuds and asks what you heard. That's genuinely useful as a first screen. It's a smoke alarm, though, not the fire report.

Three things it can't do:

1️⃣ Look inside your ear
2️⃣ Check how your eardrum moves (that's a test called tympanometry)
3️⃣ Tell you WHY your result came back low

Number three matters most. Wax blocking the canal and changes to the inner ear can both show up as “reduced hearing” on a screen, and they lead to completely different next steps.

A full hearing test checks air and bone conduction, speech, and your eardrum, so you find out which one it is.

How to remove ear wax at home, safely 👂

❌ Skip cotton buds. They tend to push wax further in.

❌ Skip ear candles. They can cause burns and damage the eardrum.

✅ Try olive oil drops, twice a day for 2 to 3 days, or wax-softening drops from your pharmacist. They soften the wax so it can work its way out on its own.

Don't use drops, and see someone instead, if:

1️⃣ You've had ear surgery or an injured eardrum
2️⃣ Your ear is painful, or you think it might be infected
3️⃣ You've noticed hearing loss in one or both ears
4️⃣ It's still blocked after about 5 days

Do I need a referral for a hearing test? No 👂

You can book a hearing test directly with an audiologist — no GP referral is needed just to make an appointment.

However, if you’re looking to claim a Medicare rebate for an eligible diagnostic hearing test, you’ll need a written referral/request from a medical practitioner, such as your GP.

Pensioners and veterans may also be eligible for subsidised hearing services through the Australian Government Hearing Services Program. Eligibility conditions apply.

If you’ve noticed a change in your hearing, you can book directly with us. If you’re hoping to claim through Medicare, speak with your GP about a referral first.

Signs of hearing loss in children are easy to mistake for not listening 👂

You called their name three times. Nothing. It might be attitude. It might be this:

1️⃣ The TV only seems to work loud
2️⃣ They talk louder than everyone else, or say some words a little wrong
3️⃣ They seem to drift off or daydream a lot
4️⃣ They watch your face closely when you talk

The one that fools most families is school. A child who can't hear the teacher properly looks a lot like a child who isn't trying.

It's the last week of the school holidays, which makes it the easiest week to find out. We test preschool and school-aged children, including kids who won't keep headphones on, and after-school appointments are available once term starts.
