Angel Gowns Australia does some very special work, providing beautiful handmade gowns free of charge to families experiencing the loss of a baby.

Their volunteers give their time and sewing skills to create these little garments with care and compassion.

**Are you handy with a sewing machine?** 🧵

They're looking for volunteers, including people who can help make crazy patchwork squares like the ones shown in this reel.

If sewing isn't your thing, you can still help. Financial donations support the purchase of materials, packaging and postage so they can continue their work.

Please note that wedding dress donations are currently closed.

Find out more, volunteer or make a donation at:
https://angelgownsaustralia.org.au/

And please share this with someone who enjoys sewing. It's a lovely way to put those skills to good use.

A new scoping review covering 17 studies found private midwives providing homebirth care commonly encounter uncertain indemnity arrangements, fragmented funding, limited institutional support and heightened scrutiny. These pressures can affect autonomy, financial viability and decisions to remain in practice. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1871519226002246

Why it matters: The review maps largely qualitative evidence and does not compare birth safety outcomes. It nevertheless supports policy attention to workable insurance, funding and respectful transfer relationships rather than relying on individual midwives’ resilience.

🎈 Birth International is 28 years old today!

What a journey it has been.

Since 1998, Birth International has been supporting midwives, childbirth educators and health professionals with practical tools, education and resources that help improve the experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenting.

So much has changed over 28 years, but the heart of Birth International has stayed the same.

We believe birth matters. We believe education matters. And we believe the right tools, information and support can make a real difference.

I’m incredibly proud to be part of this story and very grateful to everyone who has supported Birth International along the way, including our wonderful customers, educators, colleagues and friends.

Here’s to 28 years of changing birth, one course, one tool and one conversation at a time. 💜

Are women being fully informed about the risks of synthetic oxytocin?

High cumulative doses have been associated with increased rates of postpartum haemorrhage, bladder overdistension, emergency caesarean birth and a more negative childbirth experience.

Synthetic oxytocin use is on the rise. Genuine informed consent requires more than being told what is recommended. Women should receive clear, balanced information about:

• Why it is being offered
• The expected benefits
• The potential risks
• The available alternatives
• What may happen if they choose to wait or decline

Are these conversations consistently taking place—and are women being given enough time and support to make a genuinely informed decision?

Our aim: to place a copy of Preparing for Birth: Mothers into the hands of every student midwife in Australia. 💙

These future midwives will support thousands of women and families throughout their careers. By giving them practical, evidence-informed birth education resources now, we hope to help build their knowledge, confidence and passion for woman-centred care.

It was wonderful to see this group of Western Sydney University student midwives with their copies! One university at a time, we’re working towards our nationwide goal.

Are you a student midwife—or do you teach midwifery in Australia? We’d love to hear from you.
