A meaningful milestone for our Institute.

This week, we officially launched our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), bringing together staff, leadership and community to mark this important step forward.

Our RAP is a commitment to strengthening relationships, respect and opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples — and to embedding these principles across how we work, research and engage.

Grounded in our mission to improve cardiovascular health, this work recognises that achieving better outcomes in Australia means addressing inequities experienced by First Nations communities.

This is just the beginning of our reconciliation journey.

Cardiologist Professor André La Gerche discusses how, over the past 10 years, smart watches and wearable devices have become increasingly accurate at measuring health metrics. While these devices can help people take ownership of their health, for some, constant tracking may also lead to unnecessary anxiety.

Professor André La Gerche is a cardiologist and researcher whose work focuses on how exercise affects the heart, from elite athletic performance to severe heart disease.

Congratulations Lauren Cook, our first Women in Science Fund awardee! The Women in Science Fund was created to address the gender gap in medical research by supporting careers of brilliant women scientists studying heart disease.

PhD student Lauren is using stem cell models to study atrial fibrillation - a condition that affects more than 500,000 Australians. With the fund’s support she can accept invitations to present her research at leading conferences in the United States and Canada, not only assuring her promising research is shared across the world but helping her build vital international connections.

Is your workout doing more harm than good? If you're skipping recovery, the answer might be yes.
Cardiologist, Institute Director and CEO Professor Jason Kovacic explains why rest is just as vital as the workout itself.

Skipping recovery can:
• Spike Stress Hormones: Levels of cortisol rise significantly.
• Increase Heart Rate: Your heart never gets a chance to "reset."
• Raise Blood Pressure: Long-term strain without rest can lead to hypertension

🎉 Incredible news from the labs! Five of our brilliant researchers have just been awarded over $3.5 million in NSW Health Cardiovascular grants — and we couldn't be prouder.

From targeting red blood cells in type 2 diabetes, to cracking the genetic code of inherited heart disease, to engineering next-generation gene therapies for the heart — our team is tackling some of the biggest challenges in cardiovascular health today.

This NSW Health investment in research pushes the potential to transform outcomes for the thousands of Australians living with cardiovascular disease.

Congratulations to Professor Jason Kovacic, Dr Renjing Liu, A/Professor Emily Wong, Dr Osvaldo Contreras, and Dr Lennart Kuck.
