This feels like the logical next step 🤓

I remember feeling so thrilled when the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine was opened at SCU’s Lismore campus back in 2020 and what this meant for our profession 🙌 Halfway through my bachelor’s degree at the time I started carefully constructing my career path to lead me back to starting a postgraduate course here

Now with some clinical experience under my belt, I am excited to embark on this journey with a focus on integrative women’s health and reproductive health 💫

Celebrating 3 years in practice as a clinical naturopath and herbalist 🙌💫

I love this profession and my clinical work so dearly. Very grateful to do this work everyday and excited to see what the next three years brings in NNSW and with postgrad on the horizon

These photos were taken at the start of my clinical practicum, living on the Gold Coast at the time with an elderly Croatian lady, where we grew an abundance of herbs and vegetables, working at Mudbrick Herb Cottage, soaking in as much herbal knowledge as possible

Yesterday I sent out my 10th monthly newsletter where I touch on my journey so far, what I’m seeing in clinic lately, and some herbal remedies and lifestyle practices I’m implementing this season to prevent burnout and nourish my spirit. Sign up via my website www.maddielyonsnaturopathy.com 💫

My sister likes to send me screenshots of my typos and that’s how you know my newsletter isn’t AI generated 🤓

When women gather 🌸 Reflections on the third and final medicine making series held at last weekend. We delved into fresh plant tinctures using the folkloric tincture method, a traditional way of creating herbal tinctures with fresh plant material and alcohol 🌿

We created a fresh plant tincture of motherwort (Leonurus sibiricus) and processed skullcap and elderberry tinctures. Fresh plant tinctures are potent and vital herbal medicines, depending on specific growing, harvesting, and manufacturing considerations unique to each medicinal plant/region for best efficacy

My clinic dispensary includes a range of fresh plant tinctures and traditional herbal extracts made by Marleen Herbs in Tasmania one of few certified organic growers and manufacturers of herbal medicines in Australia at a larger scale, farm to tincture style 🌱

Grateful for the passing on of traditional Western herbal knowledge and celebrating all small-large scale organic growers and herbalists such as and for growing, creating and sharing these vital herbal medicines 🤗

Reflecting on the past weekend at water extractions herb workshop at learning all about cold and hot herbal infusions, including succi (juice extracts), oxymels, vinegars, poultices and compress, sitz baths and steaming 🌿

We explored nettle overnight infusion, blended whole citrus, ginger oxymel, elderberry mead, plantain succus/juice, rosemary/cinnamon decoction and more 🌼✨ Herbal medicine is extremely versatile and the methods and applications go far beyond teas and tinctures

There are few spaces where women gather and share this knowledge so I’m grateful for the work Tatiana is doing for Western herbal medicine in Australia & .elder.tree if you’re in NNSW or SEQLD get to one of her workshops 🤗

Paediatric naturopathy looks beyond the symptoms to support your child’s whole being 🌿

From soothing skin rashes to improving digestion and nutritional status, naturopathic care can make a real difference. Gentle interventions can support mood, behaviour, and better sleep for growing bodies.

Working with a naturopath might include functional testing, nutritional supplements, and carefully selected herbal medicine with your child’s safety in mind. Care can also be collaborative, alongside GPs, paediatricians, and allied health professionals as needed.

Supporting little bodies with the holistic approach so they can grow, heal and thrive ✨

Over the past month, I have been working at the Fundies in Lismore as a naturopath on Saturdays. Yesterday I noted down the conditions that presented and were treated with herbal + nutritional medicine in one day 👇

• Hayfever symptoms × 4
• Urinary tract infection
• Mood support
• Nutritional deficiencies
• ADHD support
• Heart health x 2
• Pyrroles management
• Parasite treatment
• Sinus pain
• Menopausal symptoms
• Regulating laxation
• Restless legs
• Sleep support
• Cognitive support
• Lymphatic drainage
• Children’s diarrhoea
• Post-viral cough
• Muscle cramps × 3
• Children’s nutrition
• Bone density support × 2
• Mastitis
• General digestion x 3
• Arthritis

Never going to get over the wonder I have for traditional herbal and nutritional medicine, its broad range of applications, and the benefits of taking the gentle approach to healing with naturopathic medicine 😌

Some conditions are also managed with pharmaceuticals, antibiotics and other modalities. Naturopathy complements, not replaces, conventional care when symptoms are more severe or persistent.

The inclusion of naturopathic remedies ~ herbal tinctures and glycetracts, herbal creams and teas, nutritional supplements, homeopathics, and flower essences ~ can effectively relieve acute symptoms, with fewer side effects, whilst supporting the body’s natural healing process 🫶
