🏏 Lower-back pain in a junior fast bowler should never be dismissed as β€œjust a ni**le.”

During adolescence, the lumbar spine is still developing while bowling speed, workload and competitive demands are increasing.

When repeated loading exceeds the bone’s capacity to recover, a lumbar bone stress injury (LBSI) can develop.

Warning signs may include:

🏏 Lower-back pain during or after bowling
🏏 Pain with arching, twisting or side-bending
🏏 A recent increase in bowling workload
🏏 A recent growth spurt
🏏 Previous lumbar bone stress injury
🏏 An unexplained reduction in bowling intensity

Assessment includes a detailed history, physical examination and, when indicated, MRI to identify early bone stress or a fracture. Early injuries may not appear on an X-ray.

Pain can settle before biological recovery is complete. Returning to bowling should therefore follow an individualised rehabilitation program that progressively rebuilds running, strength, cricket skills and bowling load - not pain alone.

If a young bowler develops lower back pain, stop bowling and arrange an assessment with a sports physiotherapist or sports physician experienced in cricket.

Consensus

For decades, female athlete injuries have often been explained through anatomy, joint laxity, neuromuscular differences and hormones.

The IOC’s FAIR Consensus shows that biology is only one part of the picture.

Researchers identified five key domains influencing female athlete injury prevention:

β€’ Funding and resources
β€’ Expertise and knowledge
β€’ Sex-related factors
β€’ Gendered sporting environments
β€’ Gendered communication

Importantly, sex-related biological factors were considered the least modifiable.

More actionable opportunities included better access to strength and conditioning, appropriate facilities, qualified coaching, medical support, injury prevention programs and informed communication.

The consensus also highlights the influence of stigma, body image pressure, gender bias, unequal sporting pathways and whether female athletes feel comfortable discussing concerns such as menstrual health, pelvic health, breast health, nutrition, pain and injury.

Biology remains relevant. But it should not be the default explanation for every difference in injury rates.

Effective female athlete injury prevention requires us to consider the athlete, the training program, the healthcare system and the sporting environment together.

Better support. Better systems. Stronger athletes.

Finished City2Surf today? πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

πŸƒ Around 90,000 runners registered to tackle the 14 km course from Sydney’s CBD to Bondi, and plenty of legs will be feeling it tomorrow.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈβ€βž‘οΈSome post-race soreness is completely expected. Delayed onset muscle soreness can build over the first few days after an unfamiliar or demanding effort and temporarily leave your quads, calves and hamstrings feeling heavy and stiff.

For the next 72 hours, keep recovery simple:

βœ”οΈ Keep moving gently
βœ”οΈ Eat carbohydrate and protein
βœ”οΈ Replace fluids gradually
βœ”οΈ Prioritise sleep
βœ”οΈ Avoid jumping straight back into hard training
βœ”οΈ Return to running progressively as soreness settles

An ice bath is optional. Research suggests cold-water immersion can reduce perceived muscle soreness, but it is not essential for recovery.

The important part is recognising when it may be more than normal soreness.

Sharp, localised or night pain, swelling, limping, focal bone or tendon pain, worsening symptoms or pain that is not beginning to improve over the next few days deserves a closer look.

And if you have had a previous running injury, pay particular attention: research in recreational runners has found previous injury approximately doubles the risk of another running-related injury.

Race finished. Recovery starts now.

πŸ€ One pivot. One landing. One season changed.

🦡 ACL injuries are among the most serious injuries in netball & female athletes experience higher ACL injury rates than males in comparable cutting and pivoting sports.

πŸ€ Netball repeatedly demands rapid acceleration, sudden stopping, single-leg landing and change of direction. These movements place substantial loads through the knee, particularly when an athlete is reacting under pressure.

πŸ€ The encouraging part: ACL injury risk can be reduced.

Structured neuromuscular programs that combine:

βœ”οΈ Lower-limb strength
βœ”οΈ Plyometrics
βœ”οΈ Balance and coordination
βœ”οΈ Landing technique
βœ”οΈ Deceleration drills
βœ”οΈ Change-of-direction training

can reduce ACL injury rates by approximately 50%, with some research reporting even greater reductions.

πŸ€ Consistency matters. These programs need to be performed regularly throughout the season, not only during preseason.

πŸ‹ A strength and movement assessment cannot predict exactly who will sustain an ACL injury. It can identify trainable deficits in strength, single-leg control, landing and deceleration that may leave an athlete less prepared for the demands of netball.

πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ For athletes returning after ACL reconstruction, rehabilitation must include objective strength testing, running, jumping, landing, change of direction, sport-specific conditioning and psychological readinessβ€”not time since surgery alone.

🦡 ACL injuries cannot all be prevented, but risk can be substantially reduced.

27/07/2026

πŸƒ Hamstring strains are one of the most common injuries in running-based field sports & they have a frustrating habit of coming back.

πŸ‰ In elite AFL, approximately 26% of hamstring strains are recurrent injuries, with more than half of those recurrences occurring within two months of the previous injury.

Why?

❎ Being pain-free does not always mean the hamstring is ready for sprinting, acceleration, kicking and repeated high-speed efforts.

Effective rehabilitation should include:

βœ”οΈ Early, appropriate loading
βœ”οΈ Progressive hamstring strengthening
βœ”οΈ Eccentric exercises such as the Nordic hamstring exercise
βœ”οΈ Gradual exposure to high-speed running
βœ”οΈ Acceleration and deceleration training
βœ”οΈ Objective strength and functional testing
βœ”οΈ Completion of sport-specific training demands

The Nordic hamstring exercise has strong evidence as part of injury-prevention programs, with research showing programs that include it can reduce hamstring injury rates by approximately half.

However, exercise selection, dosage and progression matter. Nordics should form part of a broader, individualised program rather than being used as a one-exercise solution.

Rest may settle the pain, but rest alone does not rebuild sprinting capacity.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈβ€βž‘οΈ Felt a grab, sharp pain or persistent tightness at the back of your thigh? Have it assessed before returning to full-speed sport.

πŸƒπŸΎβ€β™€οΈ That "ni**le" in your Achilles after long runs? It might not go away on its own.

πŸ“– Research shows up to 1 in 2 runners will develop Achilles tendon pain over their running lifetime β€” and roughly 1 in 10 each season. And if you've been injured before, your risk of getting hurt again is roughly double.

πŸ™ The good news: this is one of the most treatable running injuries β€” if you catch it early.

πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ Clinical guidelines recommend progressive tendon-loading exercises the first-line treatment and research shows this approach outperforms other exercise types for pain and function.

πŸƒπŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ Feeling a ni**le? Don't run it into a DNS.

STRETCH | When can stretching hurt your performance?

⛹️‍♀️ Dynamic stretching warm-up consistently outperforms a static stretch or no warm up before athletic performance - in sprinting, agility, strength, explosive power, repeat efforts and in rate of force production.

πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ Static stretching is detrimental to athletic performance when used as the main component of your preparation before you perform.

⚽ Your warm-up should look like the sport you're about to play β€” active, dynamic and progressive - through range & intensity.

If you need help designing a dynamic warm up - ask us or our exercise physiologist colleagues to help you!
