Supporting, representing and educating Australia’s anaesthetists since 1934.

The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) was founded in 1934 as a voluntary association of members practicing anaesthesia throughout Australia. The ASA effectively promotes and protects the status, independence and best interests of Australian anaesthetists with its principal foci being the economic, workforce and professional interests of anaesthetists. This is achieved through negotiations with state and federal health departments and associated medical bodies, the development of policy and the publication of guidelines. The Society, jointly with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), provides representatives to Standards Australia, Medical Services Advisory Committee and the Professional Services Review Committee. The ASA's publications include the international peer review scientific journal, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, the ASA news and the Relative Value Guide. It conducts an annual National Scientific Congress, and in conjunction with ANZCA provides Continuing Medical Education events at individual state and territory levels. https://iamonline.org.au/

Congratulations to Dr Clara Forbes, winner of the Nerida Dilworth prize for her presentation: “Optimal ROTEM FIBTEM thresholds for the identification of hypofibrinogenaemia in cardiac surgical patients. An analysis of the influence of increased sensitivity on the rate and magnitude of false positives”.

The Nerida Dilworth Prize is administered in Western Australia. It recognises an anaesthesia registrar who has made a significant contribution to the specialty, as assessed by the WA committee.

This prize was first proposed by the Committee of Management (COM) of the WA Section of the ASA in 1985 as the “ASA Prize”. It was decided to name this prize in honour of Dr. Nerida Dilworth. The first award was made in 1988 for a presentation in 1987. Dr. Dilworth generously endowed the prize. In 2005, Dr. Dilworth further endowed the prize, allowing up to two awards to be made each calendar year.

Today, the ASA Board and Council met for one of many productive sessions. Members and representatives came together from all over the country!

The regular Board and Council meetings are an important opportunity to put issues and ideas forward.

Today’s meeting was chaired by ASA President, Dr Vida Viliunas.
