One week into our Spring Cleanse, and there's already so much to talk about!

From caffeine headaches and changing bowel habits to hunger, appetite, food cravings and some wonderful kitchen discoveries.

This Spring, I've introduced something new to our 21-Day Seasonal Cleanse Renewal the optional Bone Broth 5:2 Diet.

And it's opened up some interesting conversations. Are we genuinely hungry, or simply accustomed to eating at certain times? What happens when we eat less? Is one Bone Broth Day enough? And what do we notice when we return to our usual wholefood meals?

After more than 30 years in clinical practice, I'm still fascinated by what we discover when we change even a few of our everyday habits.

In this week's Substack, I'm sharing some of the questions, observations and little aha moments that arise during the first week of a cleanse. There's plenty here to consider, even if you're not participating!

And if you're curious about joining us, our next Seasonal Cleanse begins in January, after the Christmas and summer festivities, with the Bone Broth 5:2 Diet offered as an optional addition.

In the meantime, you're welcome to book a one-on-one naturopathic consultation with me to explore whether this approach is suitable for your individual health needs.

One of the hardest parts of having a chronic illness is managing everyone else's emotional reaction to your diagnosis.

As a practitioner, telling a patient to rest or cut back on commitments sounds simple on paper. But for someone who has spent decades as the family's primary caretaker, saying "no" triggers massive guilt and anxiety.

Handing out a treatment plan is easy. Giving yourself permission to actually follow it? That's where the real work begins.

Stuff I write in detail on my Substack or Akademeia by Anthia (my holistic health library, a portal of everything).

For those of us with anxious nervous systems, this transition between sleep cycles becomes a complete waking. The mind, freed from the paralysis of deep sleep and not yet in REM, finds itself alert in the dark. This is when the 3am thoughts arrive...

Not all fibre is the same. Some fibres are soluble, some insoluble, and some are fermented by the beneficial bacteria in our gut.

Psyllium husk, PHGG, inulin, acacia fibre, resistant starch and chia seeds each have different properties and different ways of supporting the gut.

The question is not simply “How much fibre should I have?” but “Which fibre is right for me, and for what purpose?”

As we move into spring, understanding the foods and fibres that support your body can be a simple part of your Spring Cleanse Ritual.

There is no single best fibre.

Choose the fibre for the person, the gut & the purpose.

The more one person reaches, the further the other retreats. The more they retreat, the more anxious the first person gets. Sound familiar?

It’s an easy dance to fall into when we don't understand our own triggers. If your partner needs space, do you instantly panic? And if you’re the one who needs space, do you just vanish, or can you say, "I need some quiet time, I'm okay, and we'll talk later"?

A healthy relationship isn't about being glued together; it's about making room for both closeness and space.

What do you need right now?

For some of us, there is a long ummm… before the answer comes.

Yet ask what someone we love needs and we know immediately.

We notice the shift in their mood. The change in their voice. The silence. The tension. We anticipate what they might need and adjust ourselves accordingly.

Over time, we can become extraordinarily good at reading everyone else and much less familiar with reading ourselves.

It is tiring to live with one eye always on someone else’s emotional weather.

This is something I see often in my clinical work, particularly when illness asks a person to rest, say no, cancel plans, accept help, or put their own needs first.

My latest piece explores enmeshment and healing, and the possibility of remaining deeply connected to the people we love while still making room for ourselves.

Perhaps notice today:

Whose mood do I check first when I walk into a room?

And then ask:

What do I need right now?

Women are often the default operational system for whole families, remembering birthdays, doctor appointments, who’s struggling, and what’s running out in the fridge.

It holds communities together, but it comes at a cost. When I ask women who can list everyone else's needs off the top of their head, "What do you actually enjoy? What would you do today if nobody needed anything from you?" There's usually a long, quiet pause.

If you've forgotten what restores you, take this as a gentle sign to check back in with yourself.

Next time guilt hits you for setting a boundary, ask yourself this: "Have I actually done something wrong, or have I simply done something different?"

There’s a massive distinction between the two. Loving your family doesn't mean becoming a carbon copy of them. As Kahlil Gibran put it, true connection needs "spaces in our togetherness", closeness with a bit of fresh air in between.

You're allowed to be there for your people and still have space to breathe yourself.

Stuff I have been thinking about lately with patients.

When we live out of alignment, the nervous system receives two opposing messages: the mind and body feels fatigue, hunger, fear or sadness, while the outside demands productivity, compliance and the suppression of our needs.
