School holidays, again! This is always a time when many working parents in our industry should ask two very important questions:

“What am I going to do with the kids?”

And…

“What am I going to do with the practice?”

Here are five things worth organising asap:

Plan the calendar – Book the kids’ activities and confirm your team’s leave early.
Fill the gaps – Line up grandparents, carers and temporary staff before everyone becomes unavailable.
Stay flexible – Holiday plans change, children get sick and practices suddenly get busy.
Have a backup – Every parent needs a Plan B. So does every practice.
Make time to enjoy it – The holidays should create memories for families, not chaos for your team.

Temporary staffing can help your permanent team take the break they deserve while keeping your practice running smoothly and your patients cared for.

AB Health can help you prepare before the school-holiday scramble begins.

The kids might be unpredictable. Your staffing doesn’t have to be.

Eight years ago, I placed a 65 year old man into a new role. I remember the placement like it was last year.

At the time, he genuinely wondered whether anyone would give him another opportunity. Last week, at 73, he retired from that very same position.

He called me yesterday. It was emotional.

He told me that when he started the job, he thought he may get a year or two out of it. Eight years later, he was ready to retire.

But he told me he was still learning right up until the end. New people taught him things, younger colleagues taught him things, the job changed, technology changed, and he adapted.

I feel so honoured that he called me.

So, to anyone who thinks they’re too old to start again, please don’t write yourself off, because you are never too old to contribute and never too old to be useful.

This is why I still love what I do.

Recruitment isn’t always about the next job. Sometimes it’s about helping someone realise they still have something of value.

From our Director Pam...

Every year, I take two weeks out with my family.

It isn’t something I squeeze into the calendar if work allows, it’s non-negotiable.

Life and business can move at an exhausting pace. There is always another deadline, another challenge and another project demanding our attention. But this week reminds me that the people we love deserve more than whatever energy we have left over.

We need this time to reconnect, to heal, share what has been happening in our lives, laugh until our stomachs hurt, love each other properly and simply enjoy being together. It grounds me in a way that nothing else can.

Taking time out doesn’t mean you’ve lost your business rhythm. Sometimes, stepping away is exactly what allows you to return with greater clarity, renewed energy and a much stronger sense of what truly matters.

I’m returning today feeling grateful, recharged and genuinely excited. There are new ideas to explore, important projects to tackle and plenty of meaningful work ahead.

If you know you need that time, don’t overthink it. Don’t wait for the perfect week, because it probably won’t arrive. Put it in the calendar and protect it.

Growing pains are still growth.

We hear a lot about staff shortages in healthcare. And while the challenges are very real, there is another side to the story that deserves attention.

Healthcare and social assistance is now Australia’s largest employing industry. It added approximately 95,000 workers in the year to February 2026, yet there were still around 59,100 vacancies across the sector in May.

To us, those numbers don’t represent a shortage, they scream opportunity.

Opportunity for people entering healthcare, experienced professionals wanting greater flexibility, and for practices prepared to rethink the way they build and support their teams.

A busy dental practice recently contacted us after an experienced dental assistant resigned unexpectedly. Their appointment book was full, the remaining team was already under pressure, and recruiting the right permanent replacement was going to take time.

We quickly placed an experienced temporary dental assistant into the practice, allowing appointments to continue and giving the permanent team some much-needed breathing room. While the temporary professional kept the practice running smoothly, we worked with the client to find someone who suited the role, the team and the culture, not simply the first available candidate.

The result was continuity for patients, less pressure on the existing team and the time to make a considered permanent appointment.

Healthcare is growing, and recruitment needs to grow with it. Sometimes the answer isn’t simply finding a person as quickly as possible. It’s creating the right short-term solution while building the right team for the future.

That is something we feel very positive about.

We recently enjoyed a night out together as a team. We try to do these every few months. A chance to switch off, enjoy each other’s company and connect as people, not just work colleagues.

Taking time together outside the workplace builds trust, strengthens relationships and connects us on a deeper level.

A brilliant night with a genuinely great group of people. Thank-you.
