What does a career in care look like five years from now?

This National Safe Work Month, the focus turns to the future. For our Community Support Professionals, that means training that builds real skills, support to gain qualifications, and room to grow into new roles over time.

A job that looks after your future as well as the people you support.

Parents, siblings and partners of people living with disability often provide care for years, sometimes for a lifetime.

Having a trusted support team around your family can give everyone a little more space. It might be support with daily routines, help getting out into the community, or someone reliable so you can take a break.

As National Carers Week wraps up, a reminder to every disability carer: your wellbeing matters too.

Respite is not giving up. It is making sure you can keep going.

Do you know a carer? Chances are you do.

This National Carers Week, here are a few simple ways to show you care:

Check in regularly, even with a quick message.
Offer a break, whether it is an hour or an afternoon.
Say thank you, and mean it.
Help them find support, so they are not carrying it all alone.

What is one thing that made a difference when you were caring for someone?

Heard about the NDIS changes starting this month, but not sure what they mean for you?

From 1 October, budgets for social and community participation supports are being reset as plans are reviewed or renewed. Daily living and essential care supports are not affected by these initial changes.

If your plan changes, you still have options. Your local Just Better Care office can talk you through what is changing, and private in-home support can help fill any gaps, arranged quickly and without a lengthy assessment.

Today is the International Day of Older Persons.

It is a day to recognise the knowledge, stories and contribution older Australians bring to their families and communities, and to remember that getting older should never mean giving up the life you have built.

For most people, that life is at home. Familiar routines, a garden, the neighbours, the local cafe. Our Community Support Professionals help older Australians keep living that way, with support that fits around them rather than the other way round.

To every older Australian who keeps showing us what a full life looks like, thank you.

Tired no matter how much you sleep? Shorter fuse than usual? Putting off your own doctor's appointments?

If you are caring for someone living with dementia, these can be signs that you need more support too. Many carers push past these signs, because asking for help can feel like letting someone down.

It isn't. You don't need to hand everything over to get help at home. It can start small, with a few hours a week, a regular visit that gives you some breathing room, or help with one or two tasks that have become hard to keep up with. From there, support can grow as needs change.

As Dementia Action Week draws to a close, the final article in our series looks at what real help for carers looks like and how to find it.

Here's something worth knowing: up to 40% of dementia cases may be linked to modifiable lifestyle factors.

That does not mean dementia is always preventable and it is never a reflection on those already living with it. But it does mean the everyday choices we make about movement, food, sleep, and connection genuinely matter for brain health.

Week three of our September series looks at the six pillars of brain health identified by Dementia Australia, and the small, sustainable habits that can make a difference at any age.

It is never too late to start.

Read the full article:

Up to 40% of dementia cases may be linked to modifiable risk factors. Part 3 covers the exercise, diet, sleep, and connection habits that support brain health.

Today is World Alzheimer's Day, and the start of Dementia Action Week, which runs from 21 to 27 September.

More than 400,000 Australians live with dementia, and the number is growing. This week is about open conversations and better understanding, so people living with dementia are met with patience and inclusion, not stigma.

At Just Better Care, specialised dementia support helps people stay comfortable, safe and independent at home, with support for family carers along the way.
