My playlist is all over the place. Then this song came on, “Crucify Your Mind” by Rodriguez.
At first, it sounds like a song written to someone else. But the longer I hear it, the more it sounds like the conversation many of us have or have had with ourselves.
We understand the metaphorical mirror. We stand in front of it and rehearse the story. I’m fine. I’m not enough. I’m hurt. Sometimes the words are loud, other times they just hum.
As a friend once explained, anxiety often does this with tomorrow. Depression can do it with yesterday. Anxiety predicts. Depression concludes. Neither always tells the truth.
There’s no shame in the fact that the mind does this. It’s trying to protect us, often with old tools. Tools that may have once helped, yet stay on even after the issue has passed.
One lyric lands firmly, “How much of you is repetition?” To me, that lyric feels like a gentle but reflective question. How much of what we fear is just a shadow projected by an old memory? How much of it has simply been rehearsed for so long that it now sounds like fact?
But, what if hope was always there. What if hope begins in that small breath between our thoughts. The thought may still arrive, but our old stories don’t get to dictate the ending. What we need is just enough presence to remind ourselves that pain can speak with certainty and yet still be wrong. And sometimes, that’s enough to begin again.
None of this is a substitute for help when help is needed. It’s just a reminder that pain isn’t always a reliable narrator. Maybe hope deserves our gentle attention.
