Can AI help clinicians spend more time with patients and less time on paperwork?

Avant Foundation Member Grant recipient Dr Alireza Ahmadvand is exploring whether AI medical scribes can safely and accurately support mental health consultations. His research will assess how well these tools capture critical clinical information, with the goal of improving efficiency while maintaining safe, high-quality patient care.

We're proud to award the 2026 Avant Foundation Transformation Grant to Adelaide University.

Led by Professor Guy Maddern, this groundbreaking project will help improve surgical safety by identifying the communication, teamwork and decision-making factors that contribute to preventable harm in surgery. With a $1 million grant, the team will develop targeted coaching to help surgical teams deliver safer care and better patient outcomes.

A signed form is important, but it isn't proof that informed consent has occurred.

True informed consent comes from meaningful conversations. Patients need to understand their options, costs, risks and benefits, and have the opportunity to ask questions before making a decision about their care.

If a clinical decision was later questioned, could you demonstrate the discussion that informed the patient's choice?
