NSWMSC will not stop advocating for progressive action and change until the circumstances which burden our medical students are fixed. We’re here to represent you and fight for better.

Whilst yesterday’s news about medical students being excluded from receiving paid placement was disappointing, we encourage you to not lose hope and to keep making noise so that our voices are not drowned out. We all MUST make discourse about our circumstances LOUD and in the mainstream. Spread the word about the Specialty Training Bottleneck and Placement Poverty so that more are informed.

16/07/2026

Medical students across New South Wales and the ACT are calling for a sustainable future for Australia’s medical workforce.

This week, the presidents of medical societies representing students across NSW and the ACT endorsed the NSWMSC Domestic Graduate Prioritisation Policy, recognising the need for transparent workforce planning and a sustainable career pathway for Australia’s future doctors.

This campaign is about ensuring that governments invest in our domestic workforce so that Australian medical graduates (domestic and international medical students) are not left stuck in a bottleneck, waiting years to access specialist training whilst the Australian community suffer from a specialist shortage.

We are calling for:
• A sustainable specialist training pipeline for Australia’s domestic medical graduates.
• Greater transparency and accountability in national medical workforce planning.
• Workforce policies that strengthen both our domestic and international medical workforce while protecting a viable career pathway for future Australian doctors.

The evidence, modelling, and full policy are available on our website.

Our Call to Action:
🔴 Read the full Domestic Graduate Prioritisation Policy.
🔴 Sign our open letter and support a sustainable future for Australia’s medical workforce.
