Connecting with the at the heart of our ❤️

The Save Sight Institute (SSI) held our annual Community Information Day on 12 September at the University of Sydney C*D Business School.

Opened by SSI Director Professor Stephanie Watson OAM FARVO and hosted by Michael McGuire, the day brought together lived experience, practical insights and the latest in vision research 👁️

Our session kicked off with Matt O'Kane, who spoke about harnessing AI to improve accessibility and independence for people who are or have . Dr Fatemeh Aminpour then shared her group’s research into developing accessible playgrounds for blind and low vision children, after which Charlotte Wiltshire introduced us to the experiences made possible through audio description 🗣️

A highlight of the day was a keynote from Taryn Dickens, who represented Australia at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Paralympics. Taryn shared how a life-changing diagnosis led to an ongoing adventure that has changed the trajectory of her life. She then joined Paralympics Australia classifiers Timothy Logan and Dr Richard Rawson for a panel diving deeper into pathways to the Paralympics.

Shona Lal and Aji Kathir from NextSense then shared their experiences empowering students through educational transitions. Finally, SSI researchers Professor John Grigg and Professor Robyn Jamieson capped off the day with updates on inherited blinding disease research at the Institute.

Thank you to Paralympics Australia, NSW Blind and Low Vision Tennis, NextSense, Guide Dogs Australia, Quantum RLV, Cure Blindness Australia Inc and SeeWay for joining us as exhibitors, and to everyone who came along, asked questions, shared their experiences and connected with others throughout the day.

Thank you for making what it was—we hope to see you again next year! ❤️

Researchers from the Macula Research Group have identified a potential new strategy to tackle subretinal fibrosis—a major cause of irreversible vision loss in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

Using mouse models, human retinal tissue and retinal pigment epithelium cells, the group identified an enzyme that helps the body produce collagen, a key component of scar tissue. Blocking this enzyme reduced retinal scarring in laboratory models, including when combined with the commonly used nAMD treatment aflibercept.

While further research is needed, their findings point to a promising new approach that could one day help protect people with nAMD from irreversible vision loss.
