If your denture has cracked or broken, don’t use superglue or household glue. These products are not intended for use in the mouth and can coat the broken surfaces, making professional repair more difficult.

Instead:

• Stop wearing it if it is sharp, unstable or uncomfortable
• Keep every piece, including any small fragments
• Place the pieces together in a clean container
• Don’t bend, file or reshape anything yourself
• Arrange an assessment with a registered dental prosthetist or dentist

Whether the denture can be repaired depends on the type of break, its overall condition and how it was fitting beforehand.

Dental Health Week is a useful reminder that oral health matters at every age.

This year, the Australian Dental Association’s My Smile campaign is encouraging young adults aged 18–25 to maintain good oral health habits and attend regular dental check-ups.

For people who wear dentures, looking after your mouth remains just as important:

• Clean your dentures daily
• Clean your gums, tongue and any remaining natural teeth
• Remove your dentures overnight unless your dental practitioner advises otherwise
• Have persistent soreness, ulcers, looseness or changes in fit assessed
• Continue regular dental check-ups, even if all your natural teeth have been replaced

Dentures replace missing teeth, but they do not replace ongoing care for the rest of your mouth.

Overnight Denture Care

Three simple habits can help you care for your dentures:

1. Remove them before sleeping, unless your dental practitioner has advised otherwise. This gives the tissues in your mouth time to rest.

2. Clean and store them as recommended for your particular denture. Depending on the denture, this may be in a clean, dry container, water or a suitable denture-cleaning solution. Avoid hot water, as it can damage or distort some denture materials.

3. Brush them morning and night using a soft denture brush or soft toothbrush with mild liquid soap or a suitable denture cleaner. Avoid regular toothpaste as it can scratch the denture surface.

Always rinse your dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth.

Follow the specific care instructions provided for your denture, particularly if it has metal components, attachments or a soft lining.

Keeping your mouth guard clean is always a . To clean your mouth guard follow these simple steps:
1. Rinse with cold water and air dry it after each use, remember to keep it out of direct sunlight.
2. At home wash, the mouthguard with soap and warm water (not Hot), from time to time disinfect with mouthwash.
3. When not in use, store in a plastic box provided with your mouth guard.
