A recent ABC article published today has raised concerns about Australian plastic surgeons facing stricter advertising rules than overseas providers, particularly around patient testimonials and social media promotion.
Advertising should help people make informed decisions, with clear information about risks, recovery and realistic outcomes.
But what it really comes down to and what we need to understand is why patients are looking overseas??? Price is obviously a big part but that’s not the only reason!!
The women featured in the article pointed to South Korea’s beauty reputation, other patients experiences online and cost. These factors can influence where people begin their research but they cannot establish whether a surgeon is right for them.
Having worked in medical tourism for more than 15 years, I believe the conversation needs to include both patient choice and patient protection.
Wherever you have surgery, ask: Who will operate? What are their qualifications? Is the facility appropriately accredited?
A country’s reputation or an impressive Instagram account should never replace those questions. In saying that It’s also important to recognise that highly qualified and experienced plastic surgeons practise overseas, including in Thailand and South Korea. Having surgery overseas does not automatically mean choosing a less qualified surgeon which some people assume 🙄
At Surgery For Me, my priority is helping clients explore their options in Thailand, ask informed questions and understand the planning and support their journey requires. I Only work with internationally accredited hospitals and board certified PLASTIC Surgeons/Specialists.
